We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Genesis Sol. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Genesis below.
Genesis, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Delusion. I have to believe that everything will be ok or else I will fall into a pit of nihilistic despair and be engulfed in the feeling of inutility against the world. However, I also acknowledge that I’ve lived a fairly lucky life. That feeling of gratitude towards my circumstances keeps me going when things feel dark and hopeless.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the founder of Witty Titties, a hilarious and fun comedy variety show that only features women identifying performers.
Witty Titties has a monthly show that has some of the best standup comedians, drag queens, and burlesque performers in Los Angeles! I always say, going to a Witty Titties show is like experiencing the girl’s bathroom at a nightclub or bar. Everyone is going to be a little drunk and super supportive.
In addition to that, we offer resources to female standup comedians:
Every Tuesday is the Witty Titties Writing Workshop where comedians can drop in and get personalized feedback from successful industry comedians and writers. It’s a great option for comics who don’t want to commit their time or a lot of resources to a comedy class, but have a joke or a piece of writing that needs more feedback than an open mic can give. We occasionally have industry guest speakers drop in and give knowledge on various aspects of show business.
Every Thursday is our extremely popular women only open mic. It’s the most fun and supportive open mic ever, it’s a great room for first time comedians or seasoned headliners who want to get feedback similar to what they would receive at a regular comedy show.
All the information about shows and how to sign up for the Writing Workshop or Open Mic can be found at WittyTittiesComedy.com!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Stay Consistent, Show Up, and Keep Going.
You have to be consistent in anything you’re doing, because you don’t know when your skills and schedule will align with the person you’re trying to reach. Make it easy for your fans or important contacts to find you. If they know you’re releasing content or putting on a show on a specific schedule, they’ll find you when the time is right.
The entertainment industry is the epitome of “out of sight, out of mind.” Hang around around the clubs you want to get booked on or visit the offices of casting directors you want to audition for, etc. It’s so annoying having to leave the house and spend time and gas and money just to “hang out”, but it’s necessary for people to keep seeing you around, so it seems like you’re still “actively working.”
This industry can suuuuuuck. It’s gonna reject you in creative and new ways almost every day. But if you keep going and avoid the sweet sweet release of “just quitting”, eventually you will find success in whatever you’re pursuing. People will recognize and respect the hustle.
Please keep in mind that I struggle with doing these things all the time. It’s an ongoing battle, so do not think that I can easily follow my own advice haha.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I’m in the process of scaling Witty Titties as a business. And it’s difficult, since I’m new to being an entrepreneur. I want to be an even bigger resource for women, but going through all of the bureaucratic processes of legally creating a business can be overwhelming. Thankfully, after lots of Googling, I’ve found some free resources that focus on helping women owned businesses. Yay, women supporting women!
