We recently connected with Genice Gonzales and have shared our conversation below.
Genice, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I want to take this time to honor my dad. He truly is the reason my sister and I have such a strong work ethic. As teens, we got jobs and if we were not allowed to call out – LITERALLY.
My dad always said we were allowed to be home and rest if MANAGEMENT sent us home. It’s a funny story now, but as a teen I did not see the value yet in what he was teaching us. Today, I show up and show out regardless of how tired I am. The only times I have not shown up to work was the day I needed and emergency surgery and the birth of my last 2 children (but clients were aware so i dont think that counts!).
I know when I need to take a step back and reset, but that does not mean my work needs to suffer. This may mean I don’t focus on work while at home for a few days, I take my days off as time to stay in PJs and drink coffee on my couch, or I have someone watch my children so I can get out of the house and have fun so i can come back refreshed and refocused.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I feel like there is a few layers to me.
At my core I am Genice – driven, creative, and I don’t give up. I like anything spooky, love reading and creating things, singing while in the car, and my blood type is definitely C for coffee.
Then, I am a mom. I have 4 children and one with ASD (autism). As a young, single mom of 2 I had to learn to go from my ‘conflict avoidant’ personality to being able to advocate and hit issues head on that were so much bigger than me at the time. This is also the reason I went full steam in building a business because an hourly job was not going to allow me to be present for all her therapy needs and work to provide for them.
Today, I am the owner of Amora J Studios – a skin care studio focused on delivering luxury experiences and clinical results to the community that raised me. I cater to blue collar communities – the communities that work hard a deserve to feel luxurious.
I also cater to those with sensory issues as well. Given my daughter has the same issue, I provide treatments that will also cater and accommodate to those with disabilities that would otherwise not be able to experience self care or treat their acne.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the 3 things that were the most impactful were the work ethic i was raised to have, being a single mom, and always having a “when there’s a will, there’s a way” mentality.
The advice I give to everyone I have trained or mentored is: The more you want it, the more you need to give.
My business has always done well because I know that it will take the BEST of me, everyday, to grow and thrive. It is honestly like raising a child.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes!
At the moment I collaborate with a couple brands that i 100% stand behind. I also network with local businesses and other pros in my area.
I am always looking for ways to collaborate, network, create content, etc with other businesses and professionals.
Product brands and small businesses that I can refer client bases with are my favorite to collaborate with.
