We were lucky to catch up with Genice Gonzales recently and have shared our conversation below.
Genice, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic will always stem from my father – hard working, blue collar, and highly respected at the jobs he held throughout my life.
I did not see it back then, but as a teen he was tough on us when we did not want to go to work. I will forever be grateful for the example he showed me when it came to getting up and doing the work regardless of how tired he was.
Now as an adult – I understand. I look at my children (especially my daughters) and it fuels a fire in me to get out there and do the best i can to show them that anything is possible and hard work will always pay off.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an award winning esthetician and spa owner.
I have been grateful to be recognized as a pioneer in the industry for creating approaches and protocols to help neurodivergent individuals receive care for their skin and acne concerns. This has allowed me to advocate for the special needs community and help other special needs moms like me have an outlet that exemplifies the ways our children can be helped in society when we are no longer here to help them.
I have been able to travel, work with brands, win awards, and create a legacy that I hope my children can be proud of when it is their turn to enter the work force.
My children have seen the long days, late nights, the traveling and weeks of work that go into making all of it possible – and I am proud of that.
Today’s economy requires you to live within your means, or create the means to live the life you want. I want my children to see pass the dollars, and see a way to make a meaningful career that also gives them the life they want. To me, this is true wealth: loving what you do and being able to make a living from it.
My brand is not just about the beauty service itself. It is about giving everyone the experience they deserve while giving back to society and our local communities. It is important to me that our guests know that this spa is not just about the treatment room – we embody wellness throughout the communities we serve.
I have now created modules with my sensory friendly accommodations so that other business owners and professionals can also stand out and give back to a community that would otherwise be left out due to reasons beyond their control.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three things stand out that paved this success:
1. I am not afraid to get out of my comfort zone. I will drink a big coffee and get out there regardless of how nervous something makes me.
2. I am not afraid to make a mistake. To me, failure means you made a mistake and did not fix it. When I make a mistake I am quick to ask for direction or will put in the work to make sure I know better next time.
3. I embody what I do. I have made a career and reputation around things that mean most to me on an internal level. In doing so, I can excel and grow because passion fuels the energy it takes for me to succeed.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
When I mentor or teach I preach one thing: practice your perfection. The more you do something RIGHT, the quicker you will become. Do it so much you can teach a beginner the ins and outs in amazing detail – this is the true meaning of “specializing” in something.
That being said, I think it is also important to create a foundation in your business, whether it is service or products, that you have a few options that off set each other in slow times.
From these options, you can figure out which areas you excel in and then you curate a well rounded menu of things that you are genuinely great at.
I see this every year in my spa. I excel at channeling, waxing and enzyme based treatments. I can perform them from muscle memory and fully understand every aspect. With that, I am able to create seasonal menus and offers that match what the economy and general society is craving at any given time.
