Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Geoffrey Dicker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Geoffrey, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I thrive in diversity! First of all, I am a gay painter and writer, a triple threat, if you will. I write stories and paint pictures that I’d want to read / view. Therefore, I have to come up with something I’ve never seen / read before. For example, I wrote a novel (entitled “Journal of Grievances”) that is a story told through the pages of the character’s journal. I have also written a novel called “Post Celebrity” that is told in 9 short stories over a 500 year period but when you put it all together it makes up a larger story. My paintings are all abstract and I am a huge lover of art so I make sure not to paint something that has been painted before. The originality and diversity is what sets me apart from others and is the key to my success. From my point of view, I see so many people paint someone famous to try and attach their name to that of a celebrity. Anyone can do that. But not everyone can come up with a completely fresh idea.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an independent artist so word of mouth & people sharing my content is a huge help to me. I am currently in the editing process of my 13th book and I am hoping to get some of my novels turned into movies. Book 13 is the autobiography of a fictious rock star and takes lots of twists and turns. It will be out before the end of 2023.
On the painting side, I am currently taking commissions and I am in search of a gallery or exhibition. My paintings are called “Abstract Atmospheres” and are characterized by their vivid colors, dynamic shapes, and the ability to be viewed from various angles, offering a unique and immersive experience for the viewer. Each piece is a testament to my unwavering dedication to creating art that challenges and engages my audience. I use bright colors with the goal of uplifting the viewer.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I am a self-taught artist, so I had to do lots of research to educate myself on key people in my genres and styles. Most of my favorites are extremely hard working and prolific and that has definitely rubbed off on me. For people early in their journey, I would like to tell people not to give up as they might find many doors slammed in their face. I would also encourage them to look deep inside and ask yourself what you really want to get out of your creative projects. Are you looking for fame? Are you looking to transform your demons into something positive via creative expression? This might not work for everyone, but I prefer to create from the heart rather than from the pocket book. For me, releasing an idea from my brain and setting it free is a success. I realize that is not the case for many.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The biggest challenge I face as an independent artist is to try and find an audience. There is so much of everything now that it can be hard to have your voice heard above the noise. It has actually forced me into learning new skills such as video editing for social media and in terms of painting, I have expirimented with painting both large and small pictures. It all comes back to diversity.
