We recently connected with Geoffrey Moehl Ii and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Geoffrey, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
My journey to becoming an effective communicator began when I was just 3 years old, captivated by the dynamics of conversations unfolding around me. I remember listening to adults talk, observing where misunderstandings occurred, and noticing how people sometimes jumped to conclusions. Growing up in a neighborhood with mostly girls, I quickly learned that communication styles varied depending on the group. With boys, games were often competitive, and disagreements were resolved with a quick ‘do-over’ rather than prolonged arguments. With girls, however, preserving relationships took precedence over keeping score, and their games were more cooperative, where everyone on the team shared in the victory. These early experiences taught me the importance of adaptability and understanding different perspectives.
This fascination with communication led me to pursue a degree in Communications and Public Relations, followed by a master’s in Marriage and Family Counseling. Today, I work as a crisis counselor for the state of Florida, where I help individuals in urgent need. My role requires me to quickly assess their needs and provide stabilization, with the ultimate goal of preventing Baker Acts. This work has sharpened my ability to connect with people, even in the most high-pressure, vulnerable situations.
Outside of work, I channel my passion for storytelling into writing thriller fiction inspired by Florida’s unique events. I also enjoy photography, capturing the emotions of birthdays, weddings, and other special moments. These creative outlets allow me to explore new ways of connecting with people and expressing ideas, further enriching my ability to communicate effectively.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
While technology evolves rapidly, often rendering today’s knowledge obsolete tomorrow, the foundations of human relationships remain timeless. Honesty builds transparency, trust fosters emotional safety, and consistency ensures reliability—all of which are essential for a strong and lasting connection.
For those considering a career in counseling, understanding these foundational principles is vital—but so is self-awareness and personal growth. Engaging in therapy before counseling others is an important step. It allows aspiring counselors to process their own experiences, ensuring they can approach their clients with clarity, empathy, and objectivity.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“The Samurai’s Garden” by Gail Tsukiyama. I read this when I was a teenager and was deeply moved by how it addresses bias toward people with sickness.
