George, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Navigating the fashion industry as an African American man, where only 1% of designers share my background, has indeed been a challenging journey. However, these obstacles have fueled my determination and resilience, shaping my approach to success.
Firstly, I’ve learned to embrace my unique perspective as a strength rather than a limitation. My experiences and cultural background offer a rich tapestry of inspiration that sets my work apart. By staying true to my vision and authenticity, I’ve been able to create designs that resonate deeply with a diverse audience.
Secondly, I’ve built a strong network of mentors, allies, and supporters who believe in my potential and champion my efforts. Their guidance and encouragement have been invaluable, helping me navigate industry challenges and seize opportunities.
Lastly, I’ve cultivated a relentless work ethic and a commitment to excellence. Being the only one in the room often means working twice as hard to prove my worth, but it also means having the opportunity to pave the way for others who will follow. I strive to be a role model, demonstrating that success is possible despite the odds. Greensboro, NC isn’t a place one thinks about when they hear luxury fashion, but Greensboro has been known for being a hub for textiles and apparel design, ranging from Lee Wrangler, and Cone denim, to brands like Marithe + Francois Girbaud.
In essence, being effective and successful in a room where I might be the only one who looks like me has required embracing my individuality, seeking out strong support networks, and maintaining an unwavering dedication to my craft and goals.

At Gezzani, we are redefining luxury fashion with sustainability at its core. What sets us apart is our commitment to upcycling furniture and upholstery fabric to create stunning, limited-edition luxury jackets and outerwear. None of our fabrics are manufactured specifically for our brand; instead, we repurpose unused waste generated by the furniture industry, of which 816 billion pounds of textile waste are generated annually. This approach not only minimizes our environmental footprint but also ensures that each piece we create is truly unique and tells a story of transformation.
What’s most exciting about our work is the ability to turn what is often overlooked into something extraordinary. By giving new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste, we are setting a new standard for sustainable fashion. Our designs embody resilience and creativity, and our journey is about much more than just fashion—it’s about making a positive impact on the planet and inspiring others to do the same.

This fragrance is a testament to our innovative spirit, blending exquisite scents to create a product that is as unique and luxurious as our garments. The launch of this fragrance marks an exciting expansion for Gezzani, and we can’t wait to share it with our community.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey with Gezzani, three qualities and skills have been particularly impactful:
1. Resilience and Perseverance
Navigating the fashion industry as a minority has required an unyielding spirit. Overcoming obstacles and setbacks has been crucial to our success. The advice I would give is to always cultivate resilience by embracing challenges as learning opportunities. Stay focused on your goals, and remember that persistence often leads to breakthroughs.
2. Creativity and Innovation
At Gezzani, we’ve turned upcycled materials into high-end fashion, demonstrating that creativity knows no bounds. My advice for being creative and innovative is to foster your creativity by experimenting with new ideas and thinking outside the box. Surround yourself with diverse influences and never be afraid to take risks.
3. Building a Strong Network
Mentorship and support from industry professionals have been invaluable. Always actively seek out mentors and build relationships with peers in your industry. Attend events, join professional groups, and be open to collaboration. Networking can open doors and provide guidance that accelerates your growth.
For those starting out, focus on developing these qualities. Embrace every challenge, nurture your creative spirit, and invest time in building meaningful connections. These foundations will support your journey and lead you towards success in any endeavor.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge we are currently facing is breaking further into the luxury market. Coming from a small city like Greensboro, NC, we often face significant hurdles in gaining the same visibility and opportunities as brands based in major fashion hubs. This geographic limitation can make it difficult to connect with key industry players and penetrate high-end markets where brand presence and networking are crucial.
To overcome this challenge, we are actively seeking collaborations with major brands to elevate our profile and reach new audiences. Just as Kith successfully partnered with BMW to create a unique blend of fashion and luxury, we aim to develop similar high-profile collections and partnerships. These collaborations will not only enhance our brand’s prestige but also showcase the innovative and sustainable approach that Gezzani embodies.
Our focus is on creating compelling proposals that highlight the mutual benefits of such partnerships and demonstrate how Gezzani’s unique vision can complement and enhance established luxury brands. By leveraging these collaborations, we believe we can significantly expand our market presence and cement our place in the luxury fashion industry.
