We caught up with the brilliant and insightful George Liopetas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi George, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Finding my purpose was a journey, and like anyone, I’ve had my share of good and bad days—that’s just part of the beautiful game called life. To truly find happiness most days, I believe it’s essential to discover your purpose—a reason that makes you excited to wake up every morning with a smile. For me, that purpose is photography.
Ironically, photography was the art my parents loved, but as a kid, I didn’t share their enthusiasm. Growing up in a photography shop, however, planted seeds that slowly grew into a deep passion. It wasn’t until I opened my mind to trying it for myself that I realized how much it meant to me.
Purpose reveals itself when you ask, “Would I do this even without a paycheck? Simply because I love it?” For me, the answer was a resounding yes. That’s when I knew photography was not just a job—it was my calling.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m George Liopetas, a fine art wedding photographer working across Europe, blending the elegance of weddings with the artistry of fashion photography. My journey into photography started as a child, growing up in my parents’ photography shop. Over time, I developed a deep passion for storytelling through images, capturing moments that are as unique as the couples I work with.
What excites me most about my work is the ability to freeze the emotions of a single moment—a glance, a smile, a tear of joy—and transform it into timeless art. Weddings, for me, are a celebration of love, connection, and individuality, and I feel truly honored to be a part of such intimate occasions.
Beyond weddings, I also work in the fashion industry with major brands like Tom Ford and Louis Vuitton. My fashion photography has taken me to some of the most iconic cities worldwide, including New York, Tokyo, Athens, and Paris, where I’ve collaborated with renowned magazines and covered Fashion Weeks. This fusion of fashion and weddings allows me to bring a unique editorial style to my work, making every frame as sophisticated as it is meaningful.
I’m also deeply passionate about education and sharing my craft with others. My workshops have taken me to breathtaking locations like Paris, Athens, Tuscany, and Lake Como, helping aspiring photographers elevate their storytelling. In 2025, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be hosting my very own “The George Liopetas Workshop” in New York City—a dream project that combines my love for teaching with the dynamic energy of the Big Apple.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, I believe three qualities have been most impactful.
First and foremost, loving what you do is essential. Passion fuels persistence and creativity, and it’s what keeps you going through both the good days and the challenging ones. When you genuinely love your craft, it shows in your work and inspires others.
Secondly, I’ve always been a good listener. Listening to others—clients, colleagues, mentors, and even critics—has been invaluable. Everyone has something to teach, and being open to their insights has helped me grow, refine my skills, and see things from different perspectives.
Finally, working on my drive and continuously developing my skills has been key. Knowledge is a never-ending journey, and the moment you think you’ve learned it all, you’ve stopped growing. I’ve always embraced this mindset, striving to improve and evolve in every aspect of my work.
My advice to anyone early in their journey is simple: be kind. Kindness, combined with passion, an open mind, and a commitment to growth, will help you stand out and make a meaningful impact in your field.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who loves traveling and values the artistry of photography to tell the story of their wedding day. I’m honored to work with couples who are passionate about exploring beautiful destinations for their weddings—whether it’s the sun-drenched islands of Greece, the rolling hills of Italy, the romantic streets of France, or even far-flung paradises like Bali.
These couples share a deep appreciation for capturing not just moments, but emotions, details, and the breathtaking landscapes that become a part of their love story. They trust me to bring my fine art approach to their special day, creating timeless images that reflect their personalities and the beauty of their chosen destination.
Ultimately, my ideal clients value creativity, connection, and the importance of preserving memories in an artistic and meaningful way. It’s always a joy to work with couples who share my passion for storytelling and adventure.
