We caught up with the brilliant and insightful George Yuhasz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
George, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I learned very early that adversity is a fact of life and that maintaining a positive attitude is essential in preventing oneself from sinking deeper under its weight. One must realize to have light, there must be darkness. A gratitude attitude goes a long way and I am truly grateful for all the good things that have come my way. There is power staying firm in that belief. My approach to dealing with negativity and personal setbacks is to not accept the undesirable situation, think about how much worse my circumstances could be, and then try out ways that will result in improvement, or perhaps a total change for the better.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a former U.S. Government intelligence officer, special agent, and contractor. I have also worked in the private sector, owning and operating a global consultancy. I received a B.A. from American University with a double major in international service and government and also hold a M.A. in psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. Professional memberships include the Association of Former Intelligence Officers and Certified Protection Professional Life Member in the American Association for Industrial Security.
.
In retirement, I am an author. I recently published a multi-award-winning thriller novel, RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE, an Amazon # 1 bestseller. I am also the author of a multi-award-winning children’s book, IMAGINE THAT: THE MAGIC OF THE MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS, published in 2019.
I have discovered storytelling is quite challenging but it brings me a tremendous amount of joy and personal satisfaction. It is exciting to me because it is a creative way to give back and presents a great opportunity to offer something unique and thought-provoking to the world.
I am currently writing a sequel to RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE.
Someone once asked me what I value as a writer. A heavy question. My response was in effect the following: I believe holding myself accountable in bringing my best efforts to creating meaningful, thought provoking, and entertaining stories encouraging love, kindness, friendship, hope, and reverence for our natural world. I am profoundly grateful to all who have inspired and supported me on this amazing journey.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, developing good listening skills, constantly working on the skill of situational awareness, and applying critical thinking/analysis skills to assigned tasks and problem-solving was extremely important in my career work. All three can be invaluable to anyone’s life, professional or otherwise. How best to develop and improve on them? Practice. Take courses. Have others critique you. There is a wealth of information out there you can research that will help you improve these skills.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My father was a farmer and taught me the value of hard, physical labor. It was important to keep striving until the task at hand was completed.
My mother taught me the importance of good manners and treating others with respect and dignity.
My grandmother gave me an appreciation of my Native American heritage and the natural world.
