We recently connected with Gerald Campbell and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gerald, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I’m passionate about this question because I know it will resonate deeply with someone at a pivotal moment in their life or career. I teach a unique formula for discovering your purpose, which I’ll share with you now. While I briefly cover it in my upcoming project “I/O Investing In Opportunities,” I’d like to delve deeper into it here.
When it comes to finding your purpose, several key factors come to mind:
1. What are you passionate about, or what brings you joy?
2. Can you envision yourself doing it long-term?
3. How can you positively impact others through this passion?
4. Can you sustain a livelihood from it, either directly or through related skills?
Your purpose is something innate, where you feel a profound sense of fulfillment while pursuing it, and it has the potential for positive impact.
Personally, I discovered my purpose through poetry and self-expression. This journey evolved as I explored entrepreneurship, music, and media production, and it continues to expand as I find new ways to use my voice, creativity, and influence to inspire and uplift my community.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In 2014, I founded Nova Sound as a production and technology company focused on advancing audiovisual technology and serving venues and studios across South Florida. Over time, my vision expanded to include financial education and career guidance, positioning me at the intersection of entertainment and finance.
My journey began with music, deeply influenced by my Jamaican heritage and its rich musical traditions. This upbringing ignited my creative passion, leading me to pursue music and entrepreneurship from an early age. After completing my studies in audio, technology, and business at university, I ventured into selling stage and studio products, music compilations, and digital offerings.
As Nova Sound approaches its 10th anniversary in March 2024, I reflect on the remarkable path we’ve traveled. Early in my career, financial challenges served as a catalyst, driving my commitment to educate others about financial literacy and technology. These experiences also inspired me to author my debut book, “I/O: Investing in Opportunity NFF,” and I eagerly anticipate the release of my third full-length album, “30 Under 30,” slated for late 2024.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important skills, areas of knowledge, and considerations are: the ability to make tough decisions, overcoming the fear of missing out, and making necessary sacrifices early on. Making tough decisions, such as knowing when to exit from companies or partnerships that no longer benefit you, or leaving a position you’ve outgrown, is crucial because it positions you for future opportunities. In a world of abundant choices and constant evolution, sacrificing a trip or a night out to progress toward larger goals is not only acceptable but wise. Lastly, financial literacy ties everything together, guiding decisions on expenditure and investment. These sacrifices and tough decisions will yield dividends over time.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past 12 months, my greatest area of growth has been maintaining focus on my own path. I’ve learned not to let social media and external influences sway my thoughts, and to truly value my own ideas. In today’s world, with the internet and constant information overload, this skill of quieting external noise and aligning my inner thoughts with my desired life has been a significant area of improvement for me.
