Meet Gerard Huerta

We recently connected with Gerard Huerta and have shared our conversation below.

Gerard, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Working gives me a sense of purpose. I have developed an art skill that is useful to a lot of people and I enjoy solving a graphic problem for them. I also actively play guitar in bands which is another skill that people want. Considering both skills were something I worked on from an early age and there was no financial payoff at the time I am blessed that I can do both and get paid for it.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Upon graduating from Art Center College of Design at 22 years old I acquired a staff job at CBS Records In NYC as an album cover designer. This is probably the best job a young kid out of art school could get. After over a year I went freelance to expand into other areas of work (magazine mastheads, watch dial design, movie work, advertising, etc.). The main focus of my work is logo design but also I have done a series I call Vintage Guitar Art which has been traveling with The National Guitar Museum all around the country. I also have work in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art. Please see other samples at www.gerardhuerta.com

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One must develop a set of skills, whether artistic, musical, marketing, salesmanship, etc.

One must be ambitious and positive about solving whatever problem is before you.

You are only as good as your last job. If you performed badly on that job that is how good you are. I have always used this philosophy as I never wanted to look back on old work and feel I failed.

Also, research is important to understand the problem at hand and how someone else may have solved it.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did is they left me alone when I would have an interest in anything. By this I mean they encouraged me but never butted in to discourage me. I always had an interest in art and music from a young age and the fact that they let me go forward with it is something I always loved about them.
