We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gerardo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gerardo below.
Gerardo, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Having done art for a long time, I’ve taken inspiration from many things such as: museums, traveling, hardships, culture & dreams. Sometimes the ideas come to me fairly easy and for other pieces a lot of things need to happen for the art piece to develop. To me that’s what makes art so unique and important, the fact no two original art pieces are ever the same. All have their own separate path of development & the important thing is to stay humble, creative and active in your craft.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles, California, with over two decades of experience exploring diverse mediums including watercolor, oil, acrylic, resin, and mixed media. Lately my work dives into the intersections of environment, mental health, and the complexity of human emotion, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface and discover meaning through symbolism, texture, and intent. As far as future projects go, I am currently working on a short film that I hope to finish in early 2026. The short film will explore the various reasons art is important while taking the viewer on a journey of some of my most prolific works. For late in 2026 I plan to finish my first graphic novel with the help of other great artists, so if you’d like to learn more please stay tuned.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Some of the qualities/skills that I feel were most important in my journey were discipline, curiosity, & drive. With art you have to stay disciplined & consistent as it is ever evolving, and ideas can come and go, so you have to capture them while you can. You also have stay curious and be willing to grow both in skill and knowledge. Drive is also important; you have to have that want/need to show your craft to the world. Whether its a song, art piece, movie, play, book, GET IT OUT THERE, you never know who’s watching or who it will inspire, just as we’ve been inspired by many before us. Some advice for folks who are early in their journey, is to make as many friends as possible along the way & stay humble enough to continue to want to learn & grow.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents always gave me the freedom to explore my passions & hobbies. Although I’ve always done what I wanted they never discouraged me. From music, to tattooing to artwork, they never tried to talk me out of anything or steer me in a direction that I was not passionate about. They themselves ventured in many things like real estate, clothing, jewelry & what I’ve always admired is how they managed to rebuild their lives after leaving everything behind in Mexico. Starting from nothing, they found creative ways to move forward and give us a good upbringing. No matter what challenges they faced, they kept trying, evolving, and finding new paths. That resilience and adaptability inspired me to do the same & to keep growing, to stay curious, & to find my own ways to move ahead. For that, I’ll always be grateful, appreciative, and motivated to be my best self.
