Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gergo Elekes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gergo, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
As a storyteller not only in filmmaking but also in music I always try to find inspiration in our daily lives. Just by taking a walk in the town or driving the streets you can find millions of stories that can immediately has an effect on you. They can be emotional, thought provoking or simply just funny. When I see these I always try to imagine the background of the characters, the situation, which always keep my creativity alive.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Gergo Elekes, I have been working as a film composer and indie filmmaker since 2005. I have been in love with motion pictures since my childhood and started creating my own feature and short films, documentaries, music videos and commercials at the age of 12. At the time of this interview the film industry awarded my works with 99 wins and 66 nominations.
I started composing music as a hobby with absolutely no musical background in 2007 and since then I was responsible for the music of several international short and feature projects in several genres including drama, horror, thriller, sci-fi, comedy, action. As a composer I had the privilege to work with amazing directors like József Gallai, Virág Horváth, Sándor Gál, Benjamin Helmeczi, Tofiq Rzayev or Fidan Jafarova and score such amazing independent films as There is No Planet B, Spirits in the Dark, The Poltergeist Diaries starring Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts, I Hear the Trees Whispering starring Academy Award nominee Larry Hankin and Daytime Emmy Award winner Bill Oberst Jr. or Project Skyquake starring Golden Globe nominee Tom Sizemore, Robert LaSardo and horror icon Simon Bamford.
Besides my filmmaking carreer recently I have been working on my first contemporary album entitled Hope Never Dies.
Music for me is the universal language of our emotions. It does not matter if we cannot speak the same language until we both feel the same while listening to melodies. Music helped me when nobody did and music lifts me up every day since then. If I can achieve something similar to my audience with my work, I reached my ultimate goal.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First I think every art is a teamwork. I does not matter if you are the best in your job until you cannot work with others (directors, producers, musicians, etc.). So being able to accept someone other’s idea and form your work according to that is an essential part of our journey.
Secondly I would mention good communication skills and finally humbleness. If you really want to achieve something you must work hard until you reach it because dreams can really come true, even they sometimes seems unreachable! So come on, sit down next to your piano or DAW and virtual libraries, and compose something every day. Or grab a phone, video camera and start making short films because the best way to learn the industry is to make products as much as you can do. That would be my advice for anyone starting a journey in filmmaking or music composing.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always open to get in touch with filmmakers all over the world. Composing music for different genres is one my greatest joy. If I have the chance to make someone’s film better with my music, it is always a huge honor for me.
