We caught up with the brilliant and insightful GFE Guap a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
GFE, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Coming from a hard past, building my self-esteem and confidence as a music artist wasn’t easy but it was necessary. I had to face the darkest parts of myself and unlearn the doubts that came from my environment and upbringing. For a long time, I battled with feeling overlooked, misunderstood, and like I didn’t belong. But everything started to shift when I surrounded myself with the right people those who saw my potential even when I couldn’t. Their belief in me, paired with my own inner work and dedication to the craft, helped me grow not just as an artist, but as a man. Over time, I stopped questioning myself. I stopped comparing. I realized that my story, my voice, and my presence all matter. And the more I embraced that, the clearer it became: I’m not just doing this, I am this. I came to the conclusion that I am a star, and now I carry that truth in everything I create.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Being a musical artist is something I genuinely love because it gives me a space to express what I’ve been through, especially coming from a city like Detroit. Music is more than just sound to me, it’s therapy. It’s the one place I can lay everything out without judgment, where I can turn pain into power and struggle into storytelling. Growing up in Detroit, I saw a lot, felt a lot, and had to grow up fast. That energy, that rawness, it’s in everything I make. Music gives me the freedom to be real, to speak for people who might not have a voice, and to heal at the same time. Every song is a release, every verse is a reflection, and every project is a chapter in my life. That’s why being an artist is so special to me, it keeps me grounded, focused, and connected to who I truly am.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful things in my journey were authenticity, consistency, and self awareness. First, authenticity, staying true to who I am, where I come from, and what I’ve been through has always made my music resonate with people. Listeners can feel when something’s real, and that honesty has helped me build real connections. Second, consistency. There were times when I wasn’t the most focused, but once I locked in and treated my craft like a discipline, everything started to elevate my sound, my confidence, and my momentum. Lastly, self awareness. Knowing my strengths, but also being honest about what I need to work on helped me grow both personally and artistically.
For anyone just starting out, my advice is don’t try to be perfect, just be real. Keep showing up for yourself every day, even when you don’t feel like it. Surround yourself with people who believe in you but aren’t afraid to tell you the truth. And take time to understand you because when you know who you are, your music will naturally have purpose and power behind it.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m not necessarily searching for collaboration, But if it comes, then it comes. If someone wants to collaborate with me they can contact me via email.
If I collaborate with someone they would have to be a unique personality, I don’t collaborate with people because of their “buzz” or “clout”, I want to connect & collaborate with real, genuine people that are serious about their work & people that take me seriously.
