We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ghia Arroyo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ghia, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
Besides flowering I’ve explored other mediums of art that allow my creativity to flow and fail. This allows me to become playful in a different medium with no pressure. I’ve found it then organically translates into my floral designing and pushes boundaries.
My self care routine includes taking a few times of the week now to paint or draw freely. It keeps me mindful. During event weeks I try and hire as much help as I need to give myself space now ( I had to learn this the hard way lol). Also, making sure I make time to eat. I will literally put alarms on to remind me to take a break or eat.
I’ve found staying physically active so gym 3-4 times week allows me to release any stress and come into work with some clarity. Even if I can’t make it to the gym, walks help too.
I love me some ginger shots throughout the week to give ya girl a boost. 😀
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
This upcoming year I am really focusing on the artist in me. I love flowering in general. but there are certain designs that really get me hyped up. So my portfolio will start to cater to those that want free-spirited florals for them and their guests to enjoy.
Textures, Architectural, Landscapey, fruits and food incorporation are areas where I would like to move forward with my floral designing. I am really looking back at all my years from childhood working with different mediums and how that can be incorporated into floral designing now, as well as finding new classes/teachers to learn from.
Something exciting for the new year are creative partnerships with planners/coordinators that I deeply respect and admire. It really takes a team and being able to get another’s perspective elevates the whole event design. I am really looking forward to experimental events in 2025.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Obtain, yes skills and knowledge to whatever you are interested in. I think that is a good foundation, but never loose your sense to play or create. Skills and knowledge can be learned, but imagination allows you to stand out and now create something authentic to you.
Now obtaining skills/knowledge:
1. Shadow someone – legit ask someone if I can hangout with you for the day and see if this is something you’d like to do.
2. Dive into podcasts, online, courses, books. etc. There are resources FREE ways to get started. There really is no excuse.
3. Always stay a student. There are multiple ways to do something. Pick and choose what then fits for you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
YESS, I love my wedding clients don’t get me wrong, but my heart has been desiring to work with production design/set or fashion florals. Just to dip my toes in.
I am looking for new and upcoming artists looking to have a set design put together for a music video or models wearing florals or photographers or fun boutique shop installs in LA. Or if you’re a small shop having a wine night, sip and shop, etc and would love florals to be included.
