We were lucky to catch up with Giacomo Martinelli recently and have shared our conversation below.
Giacomo, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I think this is the best way for me to really be kind with myself and be conscious to spend my time in high quality.
Music taught me to know myself. Over my years of study, I got used to being alone for hours and hours and now it is the same. Everyday I have to read and study new music for next concerts and projects. But the real magic of music is that you never feel lonesome: the sound of the guitar, of a new piece that you are playing or practising for is somehow like a river that keeps flowing into the ocean. The ocean widely outstretches as far as the eye can see, whilst rivers are like streams that break through a door and flow into it. So, when I’m studying in my room I’m always happy to feel these rivers that flows into me as some kind of a rip current, with a regenerating effect– I feel unwinded, at peace in broad terms. These streaming waters are my six strings, the ocean is my soul. The door is the hole of my guitar.
I never feel really alone.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
First of all, be a musician, dealing with art took me in a dimension in which I’m not able to divide my life into my work. I’m Giacomo when I’m cooking, when I play guitar, when I’m on stage, when I feel a new emotion after meeting a new person. I’m Giacomo when I’m studying or inside a museum and when I’m swimming too. What I want to say is that the research of inspiration is in all things of my life. Research of Beautiful. This style of life means that I’m always in touch with something that we can see but that I try to translate into music, in my opinion the main Art that is in constant movements in search of Beauty.
Having said this, I’m so excited in this period because I’m working on a new arrangement about The Four Seasons of Antonio Vivaldi. This new arrangement is for guitar and cello. This is the first time that Seasons will be played for these two instruments. Hope audience will love this work.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three things that shaped my journey the most as a musician were discipline, vulnerability, and collaboration.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, it is a period of big changements for me and I’m searching for a manager that is able to interface with artistic directors from Japan, China and USA. This is something that I really need to promote not only in Italy my show and my projects.
