We were lucky to catch up with GIBSON KIPRUTO recently and have shared our conversation below.
GIBSON, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I have turned my music into an opportunity for growth and success through embracing my unique perspective. I’ve come to view my uniqueness as a strength. It allows me to bring a fresh and distinctive perspective to my music and collaborations. This mindset has empowered me to contribute confidently and authentically, enhancing the richness of the collective experience. I believe this sets me apart from other violinists in Kenya.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As a passionate Kenyan violinist dedicated to the art of performance, I strive to bring the beauty and emotional depth of classical music to audiences around the world. What excites me most about playing the violin is the instrument’s ability to convey a wide range of emotions and stories without words
I believe in the importance of continual growth and innovation in my craft, and I am always exploring new techniques and repertoire to keep my performances fresh and engaging. I have been honored to grace various stages such as the African Climate Summit held in Nairobi, Kenya and the John H. Jackson Moot Court African Regional Rounds Competition –Kabarak University April 2024.
I am thrilled to announce that I am actively seeking and looking forward to international gigs and performances. Additionally, I am in the process of recording my debut solo EP, which will include a mix of classical masterpieces and contemporary and African compositions that have deeply inspired me.
Through my performances and recordings, I aim to share my passion for the violin with a wider audience, hoping to inspire and move people with the timeless beauty of violin music.
Lastly, I have used my music skill for youth advocacy campaign having served as a university youth student leader at Kabarak University-Kenya where I pursue music as a undergrad major and looking forward to advancing my studies to other post graduate programs
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Perseverance: The journey to mastering the violin is long and often challenging. Perseverance allowed me to push through difficult times and setbacks, continually striving to improve. For those early in their journey, my advice is to remain patient and dedicated. Practice consistently, and don’t be discouraged by obstacles or slow progress. Every small step forward is valuable. I admit that learning the violin has not been an easy task.
2. Adaptability: Being adaptable has been crucial, especially when working with diverse musicians and in different performance settings. This skill has helped me navigate various musical genres and styles, enhancing my versatility as a performer. To develop adaptability, expose yourself to a wide range of musical experiences. Play different genres, collaborate with various artists, and be open to new techniques and ideas.
3. Emotional Expression: The ability to convey deep emotions through music is what truly connects a performer with their audience. Developing this skill has allowed me to create more impactful and memorable performances.
For those starting out, focus on understanding the emotional content of the pieces you play. Don’t just practice the technical aspects, but also think about the story and feelings you want to express. This can be nurtured through listening to a wide range of music, attending live performances, and experimenting with your own interpretation. I believe this has set apart and making GIBSON THE VIOLINIST unique in comparison to other violinists.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Throughout my journey as a violinist, several individuals have been instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills, qualities, and knowledge needed for success. My violin teachers especially in college have played a crucial role in my development. Their expertise, guidance, and encouragement have been invaluable. They not only taught me the technical aspects of playing the violin but also inspired me to express emotions through music and persevere through difficult times. Their personalized feedback and support helped me refine my technique and build confidence. Additionally, my family and friends have been a constant source of support and motivation. They have encouraged me to pursue my passion, attended my performances, and provided emotional support during challenging times. Their belief in my abilities has been a driving force in my journey. The most memorable time was their attendance during my Senior Recital I held in April 2024 in college –Kabarak University. Collaborating with other musicians has also greatly enriched my musical experience. Working with talented peers and professionals has exposed me to new ideas, styles, and techniques, broadening my musical perspective and helping me become a more versatile and adaptable performer. Most importantly i would like to credit and thank : Mr. Austin Itebete (creative director), Mr.Kevin Kiprop (digital and branding), Mr. Allan Kertich (music director), Mr. Amos Munyalo (collaborative & personal guitarist), Mr. Victor Warima (Sound engineer & drummer) and Mr.Jesse Thaiya (collaborative pianist). For those early in their journey, I advise seeking out mentors and teachers who can provide expert guidance and support. Surround yourself with a supportive network of family and friends who believe in your passion, and engage with fellow musicians, being open to learning from their experiences. Building these relationships and learning from others will greatly enhance your growth and success as a musician.
