We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gifted Da FlameThrowa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gifted Da FlameThrowa , so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
“When we wake up, we all have a chance and a choice.” – J.Prince
At some point you have to decide if you want to be heard or comprehended; it’s a choice. When you are being heard it means you just want to “get it off your chest.” When you are focused on being comprehended, that means you not only want to get it off your chest, but you want a true resolve/connection with the person you are conversing with. This means you are analyzing your tone and your word choice. More importantly, you are actively listening.
I developed my ability to communicate applying that skillset. I realized “getting it off my chest” was not giving me the results I wanted. I had the chances to strengthen or harm relationships, I quickly learned to make the right choices in my approach.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born on the West bank of New Orleans, La. My mission is to entertain, teach and to always keep honesty and truth in my music.I am Father of 6 (Shannon,Kyiri,Kyron,Terrion,Jara & Lil Terrence). I also hold a Masters degree in Education/Teacher Leadership & is I am a Motivational Speaker and award winning Artist . At the age of 15, I secured a deal as a choreographer/ writer with the hottest label in N.O. at that time “Take Fo’ Records. From Take Fo’ I went on to “Smoke 1 Records” the 1st label to do a joint venture with “No-Limit Records” headed by the music mogul Master P.
I have spoken at schools across the United States and abroad & was also a feature Artist at the NBA All Star event festivities sponsored by Nike and Foot Locker, featuring Spike Lee, Kobe Bryant,& Doug E.Fresh. I have had the pleasure of touring the U.S. and abroad to Sao Paulo, Brazil, Rotherham and London, England and I have been a featured Artist on over 150 albums, most notably “Testimony of Redemption” the album from Bushwick Bill of the platinum selling super group, The Geto Boys (Rap-A-Lot)
I have been a feature Artist at the 2009 – 2019 SXSW Music Conference, Houston’s Los Magnificos Car Show and New Orleans’ Cutting Edge Music Conference.
As time passed I soon began to realize the power and the affect Hip Hop music has over the world. From that realization, I decided to rearrange my mission to breathe life into the School System and into Hip Hop. With truth in my heart and a “Gifted” way with words something special is getting ready to take place. And So It Begins.
To date I have released 12 FREE Mixtapes and 6 National releases. I am presently working on two projects and various business ventures. I thank you for taking the time to interview me and to the Reader, please believe in you and never expect what you are unwilling to work for.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most impactful things that have and do assist me is my love & honor for God (Yahweh), my work ethic and my willingness to learn.
I cannot prove to you God exists. All I could do is tell you how following the teachings of the Bible have improved and literally saved my life. Trust him, it works. Next, you have to understand you could get a million “NO’s” all you need is one “YES” Be optimistic, willing to work hard and be consistent. Consistency will break the back of any problem.
Also, never allow yourself to reach a place of “arrival” you must be willing to continually learn so you could improve where you need to. Be a life learner.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell was very important to me. It’s a great reminder that although people are talented, there are things like nepotism, environment and timing that play parts in the success of individuals.
As a creative or any person striving for success, you easily feel disappointed when things fail. You could feel like you’re not good enough. But knowing the above can be life changing.
That’s what the book provided for me. I feel everyone should have that book.
