We recently connected with Gigi Diggs and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gigi, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome was definitely hard in the beginning. I would often compare myself, my business, and my products to everyone else’s because I thought it was a competition. Once I realized that it was really just me spreading my love and knowledge of self-care with others, it got a little easier to exist in this space.
The main thing that helped me and has continued to help me overcome imposter syndrome is my support system and my amazing customers. Have a support system, even if it’s just one other person, is so key! I’m big on affirmations so getting feedback from my customers, literally from day one, has boosted my confidence and has just allowed me to know that no matter how big or small my business might seem, it’s touched and resonated with so many people.
I’m very proud and always happy to give affirmations to other small business owners, especially Black, women- owned businesses. There’s such a massive pool of people waiting to see you and hear your story! Just believe in yourself, get the right person/persons around you and watch how the imposter syndrome vanishes!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Currently, I hold the key to all things Body Butter Baby related. I create the products that I sell by hand, along with any content and in the near future I will also seek out to do collaborations with other Black- owned small businesses. The thing that excites me the most is seeing the finished product. Knowing that I get to create something that literally is intended to increase a person’s awareness of self-care, there’s really no better reward. I thrive in the thought of making a customer’s day, or creating a scent that reminds someone of something nostalgic from their childhood (like the Peach Surprise Whipped Body Butter, that smells like Fruit Loops cereal).
I’m currently working on expanding the Beard Collection by adding new scents for the Beard Oils and I’m so excited! Some people see the name of my business and think, “Oh, they only have body butters”, but it’s so much more than that! My goal was to create a business for everyone to enjoy and reap the benefits of self-care in one stop!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As I look back on when I started my business back in 2019, I have to say, the top 3 things that were most impactful are: encouragement from my support system, my passion for self-care within the African- American community, and my faith in God.
I knew once I prayed about it and started seeing signs that pushed me in the right direction, I would excel. My advice to any and everyone on their journey is to talk with your peers and family about your plans. Let their feedback motivate you, whether for or even against you. Trust yourself, always! Nobody knows your passion like you so don’t give up but always try again and again and again. So many times I thought because things didn’t go “my way” at first, I should quit but quitting only allows someone else to live YOUR dream. The last piece of advice I would say is, reach out to your fellow mutuals who are also building or are in the beginning stages. You can learn so much from your mutuals if you just connect! I’m always here, too!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My grandmother, while raising me, always made sure to tell me to do what feels right. She taught me how to love myself and how to treat people with respect. Every lesson she taught me has stayed with me and starting my business, I carried those lessons with me, and still do.
Taking me to church on Sunday’s and Wednesday’s (and even some Saturday’s) taught me about faith, which has been such a game changer in my business. Showing me how to treat people with love and care has helped me have such great communication and empathy for my customers. It’s probably what I hear the most positive feedback on, my customer service! It’s really a blessing because I’m just doing what feels right while simultaneously healing myself and others.
