We recently connected with Gigi Howard and have shared our conversation below.
Gigi, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Last year, during my search for properties to lease for my gym, I engaged with several realtors, each presenting different spaces. While some were supportive and accommodating, the overall sentiment left me contemplating, “How am I perceived in this industry?” I encountered inquiries about my credit score and even jests about my age, such as, “Is your mom accompanying you today?” At 25 years old, often without makeup and dressed in workout attire due to training sessions with clients, I couldn’t help but question the relevance of these feelings. Yet, despite these doubts, I possessed a well-defined business strategy, a robust client base, and the readiness to commit to a lease.
It wasn’t until the day of my grand opening, while hauling oversized balloons from Party City that read “FFC”, that a wave of affirmation swept over me. I realized that my age and appearance were inconsequential compared to my determination, preparedness, and vision. This moment marked not only the beginning of a new venture but also a testament to my capability and resilience. This gym was my own, and I couldn’t wait to tell the whole world about it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I began my personal training journey five years ago and naturally gravitated towards training women exclusively. While this placed me in a niche category, I found myself working with women of all ages and fitness levels. Some were postpartum or pregnant, while others dealt with conditions like osteoporosis and neuropathy. Additionally, I trained women from the general population. During this period, I realized the need for a dedicated space, which inspired me to establish Female Fight Club in October 2023. Our motto, “what are you fighting for?” reflects the diverse goals each member pursues. Having experienced numerous gyms, I can confidently say that ours is truly exceptional. Every member not only feels a sense of belonging but also contributes to a larger mission of self-empowerment and well-being. We offer classes six days a week, flexible gym access, and personalized or small group training sessions. Whether you’re new to lifting or a seasoned pro, our space welcomes everyone with open arms.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three key qualities resonate with me: patience, persistence, and self-reassurance. When I initially scouted locations for the gym, it was tempting to jump at every opportunity. However, I’m grateful that some options didn’t work out because it led me to the perfect space in the end. The journey took about seven months of searching, building, and marketing from the moment I committed to this path until our grand opening. Persistence became vital during this time, especially since I was tackling everything solo (with the help of a great support system of friends and family!).. While the early stages of setting up a business are exciting, like naming it, creating a logo, and forming an LLC, the process soon delves into less thrilling tasks, such as crafting multiple business plans for potential locations and navigating legal requirements. Lastly, self-reassurance became my anchor on challenging days when doubts crept in. I had to remind myself why I started this journey and push through moments when the passion was fading. Sometimes, all you have left is the need to remind yourself why you started in the first place.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m currently exploring collaboration opportunities in a few ways! I’m on the lookout for another personal trainer who shares my passion for working with women of all fitness levels to join me in training throughout the day at Female Fight Club. Additionally, we host various workshops throughout the year focusing on total body well-being, including meditation, nutrition, dance, and skincare workshops. If you’re interested in collaborating with us, feel free to reach out via email at [email protected] or by texting the gym line at 614-401-2986!
