Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gil Mallari. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gil , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
I would say my generosity came from the teachings of my parents. Growing up my parents had always instilled in me that by being kind and generous it would always come back to you some way or the other. Regardless of the outcome if taken or not it showed your character as a person.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a graphic designer | illustrator specializing on painting custom skateboards and resin designer toys.
I also am one of the stable artists under the Plastic Pizza brand. Collaborating with the brand on pizza themed skateboards, apparel, soft goods, and painting designer toys.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One skill and quality that I would say that has impacted my journey in art is my drive and consistency.
Consistency in a form of constantly creating new artwork and working on numerous projects and my drive to keep on creating and expanding my artist portfolio in the different mediums and working in different art mediums.
I would say the second thing that has been most impactful on my artist journey is my passion for art. Ever since I was a little kid I always found myself creating something. Art has been a part of my life from profession as a graphic designer and as my side business and hobby.
The third thing that has been most impactful on my artist journey is my quality to always want to get better. From project to project and whatever medium Im working on. I find myself always wanting to push my quality to the highest level. Never content on the finished worked I make it a rule on every piece to take a step back and write notes on areas that can improve and revisit all the steps taken on part of the art piece.
For the artists that are beginning their art journey. The one thing I learned right from the start is create a healthy habit when creating art and discipline yourself in the process. It’s always easy to get in the moment when creating art. But it’s just as easy to lose the focus and take breaks and make excuses when working.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me as an artist. Was letting me choose my path growing up and supported me 100% along the way. The believed and supported me throughout my career on my ups and downs and always provided me with insight regardless on how I felt.
