We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gillian Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gillian below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Gillian with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic began with my parents. My father always got up early and came back late working. My mother would always do different jobs, expanding her knowledge. They always instilled in me the thought to give your all and don’t back down. This was only enhanced in the marine corps. I think being put in life or death situations and that type of responsibility really highlights your work ethic and how it can apply to other parts in your life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
CINEMA IS EVERYTHING! Being a film student and able to pursue my love of film is amazing. There is nothing quite like being able to escape into another person’s imagination or introduce others to yours. There is much that can be learned when you hear and portray stories that are from all over the world. It really enhances you as a person. I want to soak up as much as I can from everywhere film related. It’s so great to be immersed in such a rich, ever- flowing industry!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One skill I am glad I have is leadership. I have had a sense of leadership since I was young. A genuine want to help people understand or get to the best level they can. This was definitely enhanced in the Marine Corps. I slid into leadership roles and taking on responsibility with ease. Another that could go hand in hand, would be charisma. It’s something of a blessing and a curse. I enjoy talking to people and have no problem striking up conversations, taking interest in people and their stories. On the other hand, it can be battery draining, so learning when to turn the social battery on and off, I think, is key. Thirdly, I would say a stubborn determination to do what I want. If I want to try something or learn, I put my all into it and don’t stop until I have succeeded to my satisfaction. Certainly helps in pursuing your dream. If I had to give any advice, constantly reflect on yourself and whether your strengths and weaknesses have changed.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Currently, I am finding in making these stories come to life through film, so much of it is putting myself in these stories too. I find my own vulnerabilities hard to express to others. That being said, seeing others put so much of their life and heart into their projects and creative journeys has wanted me to do the same without feeling ashamed or fear.
