We were lucky to catch up with Gina Burg recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gina , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic stems from a blend of independence and creativity that’s been a part of me since childhood. I was always entrepreneurial, whether it was running lemonade stands or finding new ways to create. But becoming independent at sixteen really shaped my resilience and determination. I’ve had to carve my own path, and that’s where my drive comes from. From managing an art gallery to building a photography business, and now opening my own swimwear boutique with bathing suits that fit EVERY woman (especially active, water-loving women like myself), I’ve always embraced challenges head-on. Every role has demanded discipline, passion, and an unwavering commitment to bringing my vision to life. That’s the energy I pour into everything I do, and it’s what keeps me pushing forward.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Gina, a mom, artist, ocean enthusiast, and the founder of Sunny + Salty Swimwear. My brand was born out of personal frustration with surf shops, where I often felt overlooked and struggled to find swimwear that flatters and fits my curves while still providing the coverage I needed for my ocean adventures. After years of feeling like I wasn’t being served, I decided to take matters into my own hands and create a brand that focuses on inclusivity. Sunny + Salty Swimwear is for every woman who wants to feel confident and comfortable, no matter her size or shape, while embracing the freedom and beauty of the ocean.
What excites me most about my work is knowing we’re creating a space for women to feel empowered. Just as the ocean is vast and welcoming, I believe swimwear should reflect that same spirit of inclusivity. Our mission is to make sure that every woman feels like she belongs and can enjoy the water without worrying about fit or coverage. I’m also proud to feature the creations of several talented local women artisans alongside my own swimwear line. We showcase beautiful, handcrafted pieces, as well as spectacular women-owned brands like Jolyn, Andie, and Stream2Sea—each of which shares our passion for protecting our beautiful planet. It’s a celebration of women supporting women, and I think that’s what makes Sunny + Salty truly special.
As for what’s new—Sunny + Salty Swimwear launched the first weekend of October at 202 E. Ocean Ave in Lantana, Florida! We kicked things off with a soft opening, and I’m thrilled to finally share this vision after three years of hard work. It’s been a journey of not just creating swimwear but building a community of women who uplift and inspire each other. I’m excited to see where this adventure takes us!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities and skills have been essential to my journey. The first is persistence. I truly never give up. There have been times when things didn’t go as planned, but I’ve always kept moving forward. Someone once asked me, ‘What if people don’t like your ideas?’ when I had just published a self-help journal filled with my artwork. The question caught me off guard because I had never thought about creating based on what others might like. I’ve created what works for me and what I enjoy. My advice here is: Don’t focus on pleasing others—focus on staying true to your vision, and the right people will connect with it.
The second skill is being able to talk to people. I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter where someone comes from—you can always learn something from them. Listening and connecting with others has helped me grow both personally and professionally. To those early in their journey: Practice genuine curiosity, and you’ll find valuable insights in the most unexpected places.
Lastly, never be afraid to toot your own horn! Promoting yourself isn’t something to shy away from—it’s necessary. If you don’t believe in what you’re doing, how can you expect others to? Share your wins, celebrate your progress, and know that it’s okay to be proud of your achievements.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I’m always on the lookout for fellow ocean-loving women who share a passion for inclusivity and creativity, and maybe an obsession with sharks too! I’m eager to collaborate on a variety of projects, whether that’s photo shoots, unique bathing suit designs, or other complementary items that align with the vision of Sunny + Salty Swimwear.
I am featuring several like-minded entrepreneurial artisans in my store. I am excited to share items from women who have created beautiful jewelry, kimonos, as well as skin and hair care, and then on to handmade bags from Hawaii – I support fellow creators wholeheartedly.
If you’re an artisan, designer, or photographer who loves the ocean as much as I do, I’d love to connect! The best way to reach me is through my website or social media channels. Let’s create something beautiful together and inspire women to embrace their confidence and enjoy the ocean!
