We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gina Fay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gina, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My dedication and self-discipline are deeply routed in my extensive training as a ballerina. Ballet offers a distinctive experience for young dancers, instilling discipline through the pursuit of mastering good technique. Engaging in ballet class cultivated both physical self-discipline and sharpened cognitive abilities. The format of ballet classes remain consistent regardless of skill level, offering a structured routine consisting of traditional barre exercises, center work, including adage, pirouettes and allegro. I cherish the predictability and structure of ballet classes, which have provided me with the invaluable stability and routine through my journey as a small business owner, mother of 3, wife and dancer.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a mom of three amazing children (Ages 8, 13 & 15), and I am so lucky to have built this beautiful career as a dance studio owner, ballet teacher and fitness instructor. Seventeen years ago, DanceFIT Studio emerged within the walls of a charming stone church in Brookline, MA. Since then it has served as an inspiration to countless young and adult dancers alike. With its vibrant kids dance program catering to ages 2-8 and a diverse fitness program centered around community and a range of classes, DanceFIT Studio offers a unique experience. DanceFIT’s mission is to instill a lifelong passion for movement, music and dance in young dancers. As the owner of this special studio, I take immense pride in its achievements, expansion and unwavering mission.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The dance studio owner embodies the essence of multitasking. While having a deep passion for dance & teaching is #1, sustaining a dance studio requires more than just technical skills. While business plans and marketing strategies are vital, the true pillars of longevity lie in self-care and innovation.
Maintaining physical well-being is crucial in a profession demanding such physicality.
Additionally, fostering creativity has been pivotal in our studio’s success story. Alongside traditional kids’ dance classes, we’ve diversified our offerings over the years. From unique fitness programs to prenatal and postnatal exercises, birthdya parties, summer workshops, and tailored private and group fitness training, we’ve continually evolved to meet the diverse needs of our community.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are deeply passionate about collaboration at DanceFIT, as our roots are firmly planted in community engagement. Recently we initiated a monthly networking group to foster closer connections within our community, which has already sparked some wonderful local partnerships. We enthusiastically seek collaborations with fellow professionals in the wellness industry and early education sector, believing in the power of collective efforts to enrich the lives of those we serve.
