Meet Gina Kennedy

We recently connected with Gina Kennedy and have shared our conversation below.

Gina, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

This was always a huge struggle for me. First of all, being a woman in music can be tricky on it’s own, but I went down the road of rock music where women are fighting for basic equality. Most of my confidence issues only truly began to dissipate when I started playing bigger stages and was invited into more prestigious rooms. Overall, the biggest thing that worked was therapy, I had to “get out of my own way” in a sense. IP still creeps back in every now and again but I truly believe that the narrative in our heads holds so much power. So the story I tell myself on a daily basis is one of assurance, intention, and bravery.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m Gina, and I’m the lead singer and bass player in my band Altered by Mom. We’re a trio based in Toronto. I grew up on a cattle farm in Nova Scotia and frankly, I’m pretty proud of how far I’ve come with my music career. Getting noticed in the big city of Toronto is difficult, and we’re still breaking through as a band, but the progress we’ve seen in the last few years is really inspiring. Success is what you make it and it is truly surreal to chase your dreams with your partner. I consider myself exceptionally lucky and can’t wait to release our debut full length album this summer 2025. We’ll be all across Canada this summer and I’d love to see you at a show!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The 3 qualities that were most impactful we’re…
-The bravery and self confidence my mother instilled in me. She always made sure I knew that I could, and should, chase my dreams.
-Focusing up on my own journey ultimately led me to chase my dreams but also gave me the time and space necessary to get to where I am today. I had an understanding pretty early on that everyone is on their own creative path so I was less focused on what “they” were doing so I could really tune in and hear what I wanted.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

I think this took me 2 seconds to answer because it’s so easy. I owe a lot of my success to my partner Devon. He’s been my number one fan since the day we met. He truly lit my creative spirit on fire, and if you ever get a chance to meet him you’d feel this effect too. He’s the ultimate dreamer and I’m so lucky I get to create not only a musical project but a life with him.
