We were lucky to catch up with Gina Scottid’antuono recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gina, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose as a third-generation hairstylist through a mix of family tradition and my natural empathy for others. Growing up in a family of hairstylists, I saw how much of an impact this profession can have—not just by changing someone’s look, but by making them feel confident and their best selves. I’ve always believed that it’s not just about the hair; it’s about truly connecting with people, listening to them, and making them feel valued. It’s about creating a space where they can feel comfortable and leave not just looking good, but feeling heard and understood. My purpose is helping others through empathy, making sure they leave feeling empowered and beautiful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
What I do is exciting for so many reasons! Every single day brings something new—whether it’s a different style, a fresh challenge, or a new client with their own unique vision. I get to transform not only someone’s hair but their entire mood and confidence, which is incredibly rewarding. It’s amazing how a simple haircut or color change can make someone feel like a brand-new person.
The creativity involved is also such a bonus. I get to experiment with new trends, techniques, and ideas, while still staying true to the individuality of each client. Being a part of someone’s self-care routine allows me to build strong, meaningful relationships with clients, turning each visit into a personalized experience.
The best part is seeing the immediate impact—watching someone’s face light up when they see their new look for the first time. It’s a constant reminder that what I do is not just a job, but a chance to make someone feel like their best self every single day. It’s something I will never take for granted, especially how appreciative I will forever be to my clients who fit me into their budget during these times.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
To be a great hairstylist, especially for beginners, there are three key skills I focus on:
1. Attention to Detail: As a beginner, you’ll quickly realize that even the smallest details make a big difference. Whether it’s getting the cut just right or ensuring the color blends perfectly, honing this skill helps you build confidence and deliver results your clients will love.
2. Communication & Empathy: This is HUGE! Listening to your clients and understanding what they want is the foundation of any great service. You want to make sure they feel heard and comfortable, which builds trust and helps you create a look that truly fits their personality and lifestyle.
3. Creativity & Adaptability: Hairstyling is an art, and as a beginner, you’ll need to tap into your creativity to bring new ideas to life. Embrace the learning process—each client is a new opportunity to try different techniques and approaches, and being adaptable will help you stay inspired and grow in your craft. NEVER stop learning, take any class you can, shadow any stylist that you can!
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My mom was a single mom who sacrificed so much to make sure my sister and I had every opportunity to succeed. She worked tirelessly to provide for us, juggling everything to ensure we never went without. Even when times were tough, she always made sure we knew we could reach for our dreams. She put us first and made sure we had the support we needed.
One of the biggest ways she showed her support was by encouraging me to follow my passion for cosmetology. I’ve always loved hair, but my mom saw something in me that I didn’t always see in myself. She pushed me to go to cosmetology school, even when I had doubts. And my sister was right there too, always cheering me on, reminding me of my potential and keeping me motivated when things felt overwhelming.
Together, my mom and sister helped me believe in myself when I wasn’t sure I could. Their unwavering support and love gave me the strength to chase my dreams. I’m able to do what I love every day because of their sacrifices and encouragement. Their belief in me has been the driving force behind my journey. To be able to do their hair and make them feel good is a blessing.
