We recently connected with Gina Zapanta and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gina, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room can feel heavy — but I’ve learned to turn that into fuel.
There were moments early in my journey where I felt out of place — like all eyes were on me, but not always in a welcoming way. I used to question whether I belonged, whether I was just there to check a box. But over time, I stopped carrying that weight as doubt and started wearing it as purpose.
I realized my presence wasn’t a gap — it was a bridge. A different background, a different voice, a different way of thinking — that’s value. That’s exactly what many rooms are missing.
I made a choice: to walk in with my head high, to speak up even when it’s uncomfortable, and to trust that I bring something real to the table. I don’t shrink to fit spaces — I show up fully so the space has to expand.
I also learned the importance of preparation, of knowing my worth, and of building relationships that uplift rather than diminish. I’ve become intentional about mentoring others too, because if I’ve learned anything, it’s that being “the only one” doesn’t have to stay that way.
Now, when I’m in the room — I own it. I lead with confidence, not because I have to prove something, but because I am something. And that changes everything.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a successful attorney, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Z.A. Lawyers and Empowered with Gina. I’m redefining what it means to lead with heart, purpose, and unstoppable drive.
With deep roots in Mexican heritage and a fierce passion for justice, I co-founded Z.A. Lawyers into a thriving, client-centered law firm that specializes in personal injury, employment and injured workers’ rights. The mission? Protecting people, fighting for fairness, and ensuring that no voice gets left behind — especially in communities that are too often ignored or underestimated.
But my impact goes beyond the law.
Through my Empowered with Gina brand, I’ve created a bold movement that blends personal development, community building, and leadership tools — especially for women. From sold-out empowerment events and wellness retreats to high-impact panels, I carve out space for real talk, real growth, and real representation.

🌎 Partnerships & Speaking Engagements
Whether I’m on stage at a national conference or mentoring young professionals, I bring authenticity and impact. My voice is being sought after by companies and organizations committed to DEI, leadership development, and workplace equity and it’s a true privilege to be able to share my story and minset with the world.
What Sets Me Apart?
It’s not just the resume — it’s the resonance. I don’t just talk about empowerment; I live it. My authenticity, cultural pride, and unwavering dedication to uplifting others are the heartbeat of everything I do. Whether I’m fighting for a client, mentoring a rising leader, or speaking truth in a boardroom — I bring courage, clarity, and connection.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Resilience Rooted in Purpose
There were countless moments I could’ve backed down — when I was underestimated, overlooked, or overwhelmed. But what kept me moving forward wasn’t just grit; it was knowing why I was doing it. My family, my culture, my community — that gave me purpose, and purpose gave me power.
Advice: Get clear on your “why.” Not the Instagram version — the real one. What drives you on your hardest days? Anchor yourself in that. Purpose will outlast motivation every time.
2. The Ability to Communicate with Confidence
Whether in the courtroom, at a speaking engagement, or mentoring others — being able to speak clearly, with conviction, has been a game-changer. I had to learn how to trust my voice, especially in rooms where no one looked like me or shared my background.
Advice: Practice doesn’t just make perfect — it builds confidence. Speak up in small ways, often. Take that meeting. Share your ideas. Record yourself. Get uncomfortable. The more you use your voice, the more powerful it becomes.
3. Emotional Intelligence and People Skills
Success isn’t just about what you know — it’s how well you understand people. I’ve had to learn how to read the room, navigate conflict, build trust, and lead with empathy. That’s what builds strong teams, strong businesses, and lasting impact.
Advice: Start by listening more than you speak. Learn to read body language. Pay attention to how people feel after they’ve interacted with you. Emotional intelligence isn’t soft — it’s strategic. And it’s one of the most underrated leadership tools out there.
You don’t have to have it all figured out today. You just have to keep showing up, stay hungry to grow, and never forget: your background is not a barrier — it’s a blueprint.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
One of the most impactful things my parents did for me — especially my dad — was show me the power of discipline, excellence, and quiet sacrifice.
My father was a surgeon — a role that demanded precision, long hours, and a deep sense of responsibility. But what left the biggest impression on me wasn’t just his career; it was how he carried it. He didn’t chase status or recognition — he served people. He showed up early, stayed late, and held himself to an incredibly high standard, not for applause, but because that’s what integrity looks like.
That shaped me. It taught me that excellence isn’t loud — it’s consistent. That real leadership often happens behind the scenes. And that our work should always reflect our values.
Watching him navigate such a demanding career while being a true champion of the underserved community gave me a living example of what it means to lead with both strength and heart. His dedication became my blueprint for how I show up — in my business, in my family, and in my purpose.
