We recently connected with Giovanna Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Giovanna with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I’d say my work ethic is a mix of nature, nurture, and pure, unfiltered stubbornness. My dad was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army—the human embodiment of discipline and drive. Even after retiring, he kept grinding, proving that “taking it easy” is apparently not in our DNA. Naturally, I inherited his competitiveness and relentless work ethic (along with an inability to sit still for too long). If I’m going to do something, I’m going to give it my all or drive myself slightly insane trying.
That said, resilience isn’t just something you’re born with—it’s built. I grew up in a chaotic household, and when life throws you into the deep end early, you either sink, swim, or develop an Olympic-level ability to tread water indefinitely. I learned fast how to adapt, push through, and hustle, because there really wasn’t another option.
After high school, college wasn’t exactly calling my name, so I joined the military instead. It for sure challenged me, gave me structure, and reinforced what I already knew deep down—you get out what you put in. No one is going to hand you success; you have to work for it, fight for it, and sometimes, just out-stubborn the obstacles in front of you.
Fast forward a few years, and let’s just say I took the scenic route through my career path. HVAC, bartending, real estate, child care, fitness, a vape shop, a hair salon—you name it, I’ve probably clocked in at least once. I had what I like to call a “chase the dopamine” mentality—constantly looking for something that felt right, something I could commit to without feeling trapped.
Then, Art Direct found me. And for the first time, it was like everything clicked. I didn’t have to force myself to care—I already did. I didn’t have to force myself to go to work—I wanted to. AD created this business where everyone who walks in feels at home. It isn’t a wonder why they have grown so fast in the industry. It isn’t just a job; it is a space where I can thrive, where my skills, creativity, and competitive drive actually matter. Needless to say, “Where does my work ethic come from?” A little of the past and a whole lot of loving your job and the company you work for. And once I found that? Game over. I was done searching.
Well… unless we’re talking about where I left my coffee. Because I guarantee you, that’s an ongoing battle.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
If I had to sum up what I do in one sentence, it would be this: I help artists grow, create opportunities, and make sure they feel seen and valued, while of course helping preserve their artwork for the long haul.
As the Marketing, Gallery, and Artist Liaison at Art Direct, my job is a mix of curation, artist support, and making sure people actually know about the incredible work we do. I work directly with artists to help them grow their businesses—whether that’s through branding, fine art printing, or getting a game plan together to help them start. At the same time, I help collectors and clients preserve and display the pieces that matter most to them, because art isn’t just decoration—it’s a story.
What makes Art Direct special isn’t just what we do, it’s how we do it. This isn’t just a business; it’s a creative hub, a problem-solving powerhouse, and a space where artists and collectors know they’re in good hands. The environment here is collaborative, welcoming, and, above all, dedicated to excellence.
We don’t believe in “good enough” we believe in going the extra mile, every single time. Whether it’s fine art printing, framing, or artist support, we push boundaries to take everything to the next level. And sometimes? We go out of our way to a fault—because making sure our artists and customers are fully happy isn’t just a goal; it’s a standard.
But beyond the craftsmanship and attention to detail, what really sets us apart is our commitment to the people we serve. We’re here to uplift, empower, and build lasting relationships.
We want to be more than just a business in our community—we want to be a staple. When people think of Art Direct, we want them to think: creativity, success, and a team that genuinely cares. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about selling a service—it’s about elevating art and the people who create it.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, there are three key things that had the biggest impact on my journey—tenacity, adaptability, and the ability to connect with people.
Tenacity – Keep Going, No Matter What
Life, careers, and especially the art world are full of curveballs. Whether it was growing up in a tough environment, navigating different industries, or jumping into the unknown, I had to learn early that challenges aren’t roadblocks they’re just part of the path. Tenacity isn’t just about pushing through; it’s about having the mental strength to keep going even when things feel impossible. You don’t quit. You find another way.
If you’re just starting out, get comfortable with discomfort. Growth happens in the hard moments. The people who make it aren’t the ones who had it easy—they’re the ones who kept going when it wasn’t.
Adaptability – Pivot or Get Left Behind
I’ve worked in so many industries. Each one taught me something different, but more importantly, they taught me how to adapt. The ability to jump into different environments, learn on the fly, and problem-solve when there’s no clear answer has been a game-changer in my career.
Be open to learning anything and don’t box yourself in. The best opportunities often come from places you never expected. The more you can pivot, problem-solve, and stay flexible, the more doors you’ll open for yourself.
Superpower-Level Empathy – The Art of Connecting with People
People remember how you make them feel. One of the biggest advantages I’ve had in my career is my ability to read a room and truly connect with people. I’ve always been hyper-aware of energy—whether it’s a client, an artist, or a room full of strangers, I can feel what’s going on beneath the surface. It’s like a built-in compass that helps me know when to push, when to listen, and when someone just needs to be heard.
This ability has helped me build real relationships, solve problems before they’re spoken, and create an environment where people feel comfortable and valued. And at the end of the day, that’s what makes the biggest impact, because no matter what industry you’re in, everything comes down to people.
Develop your emotional intelligence. Listen. Read between the lines. People will always tell you what they need—sometimes with words, sometimes without. The stronger your ability to genuinely connect, the more doors will open for you.

How have you overcome or persisted despite the challenges related to mental health issues?
Challenges? Oh, Absolutely.
Running a gallery and working in the art industry is equal parts passion and problem-solving. Every day brings something new—sometimes it’s an amazing opportunity, and sometimes it’s “How is this even happening right now?”
Right now, one of my biggest challenges is wearing multiple hats at once. As the Marketing, Gallery, and Artist Liaison at Art Direct, I’m juggling artist support, community outreach, exhibitions, promotions, and making sure the business itself continues to thrive. It’s a lot, but it’s also what keeps me on my toes.
Art Direct is expanding, and with that comes a million moving parts—bigger events, more collaborations, and an ever-growing list of things to coordinate. Making sure we scale in a way that still feels personal, intentional, and artist-focused is something I’m always mindful of.
At the end of the day, challenges mean growth. And if things ever get too easy? That probably means it’s time to dream even bigger.
