Meet Giovanni Junor

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Giovanni Junor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Giovanni below.

Giovanni, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

The most important mindset to keep in a situation where you’re the only one looking or being unique is to use that to your advantage, particularly in business. That mindset is what helps you stand out and be more successful, whether you’re making a sale or even making a small interaction with another person.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an upcoming (press on) nail tech based in Tucson, AZ. I’m currently building my brand and focused on expanding my product line to include various cosmetics and other pleasantries whilst being as sustainable as possible.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I’ve been looking forward to being asked this! The three most useful qualities I’ve used on my business journey are being extremely selective with the advice I apply, being diligent and persevering whilst learning my nail art skills, and having a “company” mindset as opposed to a “side hustle” mindset.

It is of the utmost importance to be discerning whilst taking advice. People like friends and family members may mean well when giving advice, but they may not have the requisite knowledge to advise you properly. Taking the wrong advice can at best, delay your goals, and at worst, ruin everything you’ve worked hard for.

Being diligent and persevering is tantamount to being selective. No business can grow on a casual, inconsistent schedule. It is crucial to put in work on your business daily so you can improve and offer the best service possible. I’ve had to restart my business three times before setting up in Tucson, and perseverance has gotten me through every time. Now my business is more successful than it was before.

The final point, having a “company” mindset as opposed to a “side hustle” mindset is paramount. Having a company mindset means that you are willing to learn how to grow your business and put in work to scale it up. Having a side hustle mindset means you don’t wish to grow your business beyond a small hobby. This mindset helps me push myself to do better daily, even when I would rather relax.

These three tips have helped me be more consistent and grow my business! I’m thankful to have learned them early on.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I like to focus on avoiding being overwhelmed; but if it does occur, I like to take at least three days’ rest from whatever is causing it (if possible). I spend these days catching up with friends, going outside to do a physical activity, or just going to the cinema and enjoying a day of films.

If it’s not possible to take three whole days away from the cause, I make sure I take short breaks whilst working on the task, listen to calming music or shows, and take other small actions to minimize how overwhelmed I am.

While I do believe it is important to improve daily, I also believe that ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’. Do what makes you feel calm and relaxed; clear your head before getting back in the game.
