Meet Girlish

We recently connected with Girlish and have shared our conversation below.

Girlish, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I think we discovered pretty early in life, for better or worse, that our purpose in life was to be creative — maybe broader than even just music. We’re both super fascinated with all facets of the art world: writing, filmmaking, visual storytelling, etc… and we selfishly want to do it all! We both connected with music early on in middle school/high school band class together. Alex went on to pursue a more music trajectory while I went to art school. It’s definitely a life that chose me, and not the other way around. I wish it wasn’t the only thing I knew how to do!!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Girlish is a music duo consisting of Kevin and Alex (myself)! We’ve been making music as Girlish for about 5ish years, and we’ve been best friends since we met as kids in middle school band. We love making music together, and we love creating together, so the Girlish project has been very rewarding in that regard. We put out our latest EP “Heartthrob” earlier this year (2025) and we believe it to be our favorite music we’ve ever put out. One of our favorite things to do in life is perform and this project was made with performance in mind, so we aimed for an entertaining, engaging, and demanding project! I know we both are very proud of all the artistic choices we’ve made as Girlish and we look forward to making more art. We’re currently making more music and really look forward to sharing more of ourselves through this work.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I know for myself, community theatre was a huge part of my journey. Getting involved in performing at a young age totally broke me out of my shell, (I was a really shy kid), and I am forever indebted to those experiences! Genuinely think it shaped my personality and how I carry myself through life, so I definitely highly recommend that to anyone who’s even remotely curious in giving it a shot! I also spent a lot of time digging through the internet as a kid and discovering a huge love for 20th century music. I think reflecting on the roots of where music comes from is super important and educational for artists! Taking a bunch of art history classes in school further affirmed this for me. There’s just so much to be learned from!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

They gave me trust and guidance. It takes a lot for parents to trust their kids and guide them towards happiness and success but my parents always allowed me to be true to myself and be genuine even if it was different. I’m lucky for the mindset and positivity they instilled in me as its allowed me to pursue deeper relationships, a better self understanding, and a fearlessness to chase the things I want in life. They served as strong role models and their strength gave me the faith that nothing is unachievable.
