Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Girls Who Paint Murals Christine Crawford & Allison Dunavant. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Girls Who Paint Murals, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Being a full-time creative has its difficulties when keeping creativity alive, however, having a partner in business helps when the creative block hits. We are client-based when it comes to creating murals for businesses and/or cities, so we constantly work with clients’ specific criteria and wants. Although, I think that is what sets us apart from others in the business. Because we typically work with multiple clients at a time, it sometimes is hard to come up with different designs with specific needs. Keeping the creativity alive is much easier when we collaborate with our different styles of art, create mood boards together, and bounce ideas back and forth. Typically our best work comes from making a design and giving it to one another to create on top of it to create a unique collaboration. Whenever we get the opportunity to create in our own style, it comes naturally. We try to still make it a point to set aside time to be creative in our own rights and paint murals that have our own style, and we love it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am Christine Crawford and I am a South Carolina based muralist and co-owner of the business Girls Who Paint Murals. This partnership includes myself and Allison Dunavant. We met via Instagram a couple years ago and started working together when Allison needed assistance on a mural for the Boys and Girls Club in Hilton Head, SC. After we realized we worked so well together, we decided to create our business, GWP Murals. Working together has elevated our design skill and business model, creating designs for top clients like Amazon, Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, Chubbies, Verizon, MUSC, WLTX, Williams Brice Stadium, multiple cities, and more. We are a client-based mural company, listening to specific businesses’ needs and wants when it comes down to design. Our goal is to expand GWP murals to create an inclusive team of artists to tackle more and large scale work.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
There are always learning curves when creating your own business. For every project and client, we learn a new skill or tackle a new challenge whether it be a wall texture, ground surface, environment, or business issue. I think the main area of knowledge that is most important to learn when being a creative is learning the business side of things. While creating murals is what the public sees, learning the business side is what we’re doing the other 50% of the time, which has had a positive impact on our journey when dealing with different projects. I also think making yourself easily accessible for the public is a good quality to have as a business. When clients are looking for a specific need, you want to make sure your profile and portfolio expresses that need. Whatever your business is, you want to make sure you make it known that you provide a service/product, what that service/product is, and how they can reach you about the service/product. And as a business, and as a creative, you have to remember that people are buying BOTH your art and your skill.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Creating our business, Girls Who Paint Murals, has been our biggest area of growth. We realized there was a need, recognized our strengths, and quickly understood that we could create a partnership that would be extremely impactful for our growth. We are so proud that we can provide businesses and cities with unique murals that have a positive impacts to employees and communities all over the East Coast.
