Meet Giulia Eve Flores

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Giulia Eve Flores a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Giulia, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I believe that the creative state is truly our most natural state as humans. And that we, as a species, tragically underestimate our creative power. We walk around disempowered, like we’re not some miracle of biology, like some cosmic intelligence isn’t beating our hearts and animating us every moment of the day, like our bodies and minds aren’t the most advanced soft technology to walk this Earth. I’m convinced that the first step for any aspiring artist is to truly take ownership of the limitless creative power within.

For me, creativity, that oh-so-sought-after flow state, is all about openness, softness, playfulness, and receptivity. I show up to my creative process ready to play, discover and explore. I show up with a light heart, an open mind, positive anticipation, and trust in the process. It also helps me to know that nothing that flows through me is ever something I can really take credit for. Because it’s really coming from a place that transcends me. I simply tap into a field to dance with Inspiration itself. I think that perspective takes a load off. When I have “my date with Creativity” as I sometimes like to say, Creativity always shows up. That’s because of mindset, but also because of ritual. As far as I know, every high performer in any field utilizes ritual to calibrate themselves into a state of consciousness where now, suddenly, they’re “on”. For me personally, that means I drink ceremonial cacao, I get centered and vocalize my intentions, and I listen to binaural beats that promote flow state. Once I’m dropped into my process, I lose all sense of time. I enter into a stream-of-consciousness type of creativity. When I re-emerge from that, the left side of my brain will come online to do some of the analytical “clean-up work” so to speak, but the initial outpouring is always completely free-flowing and I never stop to judge or second guess it. Judgment kills creativity.

The last ingredient that is key for me to keep my creativity alive and overflowing is plenty of rest and nourishment. Although I’m actually great at the hustle and grind, and I seem to always be juggling many things in my life that ask a lot of my time and energy, I really prioritize rest, relaxation and play. Why? Because what beauty can be created from a space of tension, contraction and stress? We need time to daydream and be idle. To be immersed in nature. To get really present in the magical moment of now – that’s when creative breakthroughs happen. That’s when we make new associations and connections and have the opportunity to see things from fresh, new angles. There are times as a creative when we need to be at peak performance under high pressure, but those times are way easier navigated when you prioritize a calm nervous system and the things in life that relax you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

So, I’m a Bolivian-Dutch, NYC born, Amsterdam raised, and London trained professional actress, writer and producer, whose expertise lies in the powerful intersection of consciousness/human potential and creativity/storytelling.

I recently completed my first narrative feature screenplay ‘Becoming the One’, a romantic comedy-drama with depth. The movie follows an ambitious and emotionally stunted journalist who braves the treacherous Himalayas for a make-or-break interview with the world’s most reclusive monk, only to find herself falling for a romantic poet, who has come along to steal both her story and her heart. As tensions rise, they both discover that the greatest story of all might be the one unfolding between them.

I’m currently in the process of pitching and securing funding for this indie film, with some investors attached. I’m also working on my second feature; a multi-narrative hyperlink magical realist piece set in Bolivia, which explores themes of “blood memory”, intergenerational trauma and healing, mental time travel, ancestry, and forgiveness.

For the past three years, I’ve worked at streaming network Gaia as an Associate Producer. I’ve worked on a total of nine TV series, both in English and Spanish. My most rewarding work there was on an assigned docuseries project ‘Crystals: Healing, Manifestation & Alchemy’ which I wrote, narrated and associate produced. At Gaia, I also MC the live events at the GaiaSphere, sharing the stage with luminaries like Gregg Braden and Michael Beckwith. I’m also a voice-over talent for Gaia’s original series and social media, as well as a writer and on-screen talent for their social media.

Lastly, one of my greatest passion projects is my 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which I founded in 2018, called the Conscious Performers Collective. “CPC” started as a holistic theatre company that pioneered original thought-provoking and life-affirming productions. “CPC” had three different branches: community outreach programs, original theatre productions, and transformative workshops. We ran programs in elementary schools in the New Jersey/Philadelphia area, for example. These programs were a combination of mindfulness and meditation and play/theatre/games. The goal was to give children better inner resources, more opportunities to play and express themselves creatively, and holistic skills to self-regulate and get to know themselves. We also developed original productions and were in the midst of workshopping our most ambitious one when all theatre was shut down because of COVID (this project transformed into the movie I wrote). Our final branch was exceptionally successful; the branch of transformative workshops. These 5-hour workshops were crafted as full-circle journeys and were always a mixture of healthy challenge, deep introspection, delightful play, meaningful cathartic release and powerful connection. They were a combination of psycho-physical performance techniques and exercises in consciousness expansion from various long-standing traditions, as well as new techniques I synthesized through pure innovative spark. These experiences were for performers, as well as for the general public. I am reviving a new version of the Conscious Performers Collective over the next few years, where I aim to shift my focus to intensive artist retreats.

Here is the manifesto video I created for CPC a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsqKVRxFIkI

Ultimately, when I think about “dream legacy”… I want to create a new story. A story that deepens our connection to ourselves, to each other, and to the cosmos. Knowing deeply that stories hold the power to shape our minds and transform the worldview of entire generations, I aim to create inspiring, uplifting and empowering templates that awaken a new way of seeing and being for humanity. I love nothing more than transporting and enchanting audiences and telling stories that hold a glimmer and promise of a more harmonious and empowered future. Hopefully one day, I can look back and say I was part of a “Cinema of Self-Realization” movement that truly shone a light on our common humanity and divinity through the incomparable power of story. Here we go!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most impactful skills I’ve developed on my journey so far are:

An “I will thrive” mentality – As someone whose early life was very changeable, moving countries multiple times before the age of 7, from the US to the Netherlands, Bolivia, and back, I’ve developed a playfully defiant attitude with the universe that says: “Plant me anywhere and I’ll thrive”. I have an unshakeable belief in the resilience of the human spirit. I believe that, even in the most barren conditions, I’ll be able to tap into the well of resourcefulness and optimism that lives at the core of my being and turn my life into a thriving oasis, even when external circumstances try to tell me otherwise. Gratitude plays a huge role in this. And the belief in miracles and quantum leaps. My foundational experiences didn’t just make me more adaptable and resilient; they also increased my creativity, my ability to problem-solve on the fly, and they awakened this delightful desire to revel in and celebrate the constant inevitable changes of life. They’ve liberated me to take bolder action. To go for things that excite me and to not let fear hold me back. To jump off the cliff when it feels right, even when I’m absolutely terrified.

This ties into the next key skill – Following my bliss. I have a deep need to experience life to its fullest. I think we all do. Life, to me, is this beautiful treasure hunt. One where we are often denied seeing the full picture, but where we occasionally are blessed with promising glimpses and glimmers of a more fulfilling future. Life has shown me that it consistently improves when I choose that which gives me the greatest joy at any given moment. When I follow passion, synchronicity and true, meaningful joy at all times, without attaching to the outcome, life becomes utterly magical. Of course, I don’t mean to encourage people to follow the path of immediate gratification or superficial pleasure-seeking. It’s deeper than that. It’s about tuning into your heart and allowing your heart to guide your course. And then calling in the mind’s prowess to fall into step with your heart so it can work more logically on the surface to get you where you want to go. And the beauty of this is, that the more you follow your bliss, the more confidence and momentum you’ll gain as you experience life working out for you.

Last but not least, a fundamental key for me has actually become part of my “brand” so to speak, and that is to always have a – Cosmic perspective. This is the alpha and omega of my being. A cosmic perspective means being able to zoom out to look at the greater picture of this dynamic woven tapestry of all existence, and the ability to surrender to its unfathomable wisdom, beauty and grace. Yes, we are powerful creators and we can create the life our souls most deeply desire, and also – yes, there is a higher plan at play, and a divine timing that transcends the forcefulness of our own egos. When we can look at situations from a bird’s eye perspective and untangle our minds from our own limited, narrow view of something (even just briefly!), we may get a taste of what many have termed “the peace that passeth all understanding”. Acceptance of the isness of all things and forgiveness of it all is the greatest source of grace in this world. I think especially for changemakers who wish to make this world a better place, it’s important to remember the most powerful way to do that. Pushing against the things we don’t want only creates more of what we don’t want. Creating agitated ripples on the surface of the ocean (the mind’s mental agitation) will never be as impactful as dropping deeply into the center of your being, to the bottom of the ocean, and moving from there (from the heart, from the soul). It’s that type of movement that can create tidal waves of positive change in your reality. And when you operate from this place, not only will your intentions, vision and actions become more effortlessly manifested, but you’ll also know that they were born from a place that is in harmony with the forces and source of life itself. A final reminder that I’ll share, which I hope will offer people some relief, is that nothing that is truly meant for you could ever pass you by. And that everything that isn’t for you… well, there’s absolutely nothing you can do to make it yours. There is peace in that. Trust life.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I drop everything to connect with myself. I believe the most priceless gift we could ever possess or experience in this world is deep intimacy with ourselves. Nothing beats it. Everything comes from it. Everything depends on it. Every single thing in our lives is an immediate reflection, a mirror, of the relationship we have with ourselves. Too many of us live in unconsciousness. We don’t know ourselves. Too many of us deny and disown parts of ourselves we deem undesirable. Too many of us speak unkindly to ourselves; the background hum of our incessant subconscious mental chatter tends to not be very positive.

When life rocks me or sets me adrift, the true intimacy I have with myself becomes my anchor point. I ask myself: How can I be my own best friend? How can I love myself into feelings of okay-ness and safety? How can I speak to my inner child and soothe them? A lot of my process comes from allowing myself to feel deeply. From not shying away from uncomfortable truths. From not looking away when life holds up a mirror to my wounds, my deepest fears, my greatest desires, my biggest dreams, my vulnerabilities, my triggers. But instead to lean in. To gently say “yes” to it. And “What are you trying to teach me?” When you choose to love something that you’ve judged to be unlovable, alchemy happens. Shame dissolves and grace blossoms you open. When you really get in touch with your truth and you start to live in a way that prioritizes honoring that truth always – in an authentic, kind and nonviolent way – an emotional, psychological and spiritual honesty flowers from within you that is utterly untouchable. You trust yourself beyond anything else in life. You rely on yourself. You know you’ve got your own back. Always.

Also, in life, I’ve found that we can only expand as profoundly as we’re willing to contract. The greatest heights often come to those who are brave and willing enough to traverse the darkest valleys too, while tenderly holding their own hands and their own hearts. This life is filled with potentialities for suffering. It’s part of the deal of being human. Accept it. Embrace this human experience in its totality and embrace the beauty of your own soul. The hall of mirrors that is your life will become more beautiful and loving, the more beautiful and loving you become – from the inside out.
