We were lucky to catch up with Giuliana Brandon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Giuliana , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I had a very difficult childhood that made me who I am today. I grew up in a dysfunctional family and had to battle with the challenges of sexual abuse at a very young age. What I describe now as a very dystopian upbringing fueled my desire to build a different future for myself where I created peace and stability. As I pushed through, I always reminded myself that nothing lasts forever, not the bad things…not even the good things.
I always envisioned myself as a strong provider for my family by being financially independent. Pursuing a less common career path, like beauty and cosmetology, allowed me to unconsciously heal that inner child because I was pursuing something that I loved. However, it was not all sunshine and rainbows because I was starting my business from zero and I was also pregnant with my first child. Nonetheless, I do have to give credit where it’s due, because I was so lucky to have my amazing husband Max who supported me through all of this. I think things would look different now if I wouldn’t have had him by my side.
That being said, I became resilient because I did not let myself to get stuck in the toughness of life, and I started thinking about my next steps in order to fix it. In the end, what I’ve learned is that I’m not defined by my past, but rather my lessons and my approach to become the person I am today.
I stand here today being immensely grateful for my family, friends, and clients who supported me every step along the way. There’s no better feeling than being able to make a living out of helping people feel better.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I work as a luxury Makeup-Artist and Hairstylist in Goshen, NY and beyond. My cozy Studio is a one-stop place for my clients to get ready for any occasion. They will also find a big range of services in which we offer cosmetology services ranging from Keratin Treatment, Color to Brow Lamination and Tinting.
I have years of experience in the industry and my philosophy consists in enhancing my clients’ natural features to boost their inner confidence.
Whether they’re attending a wedding, prom night, or a glamorous red carpet-event, I work 1-1 with them to create a customized look that reflects their personality and style.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that drive my approach to business are Discipline, Passion, and Humility.
Discipline because I had to keep up with a busy schedule for many years due to my studies. I had to wake up at 5am to go to work until 10pm, and the next day I had to be college all day. I also had to find time to study for my quizzes and final exams.
Passion is also important to me because it is the reason I wake up every morning and feel excited to go to work. While doing what I most love and seeing the outcome of clients being so happy makes the passion of what I do even more stronger. I’m so happy I chose it and that I get to improve people’s lives everyday because of it.
Last but not least, humility is also at the forefront of what I do. For me, it’s incredibly important to be open and receptive to constructive criticism so that I get to grow as a professional and human being.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed or anxious, I reach out to my therapist. She has been such a life-changer for me and I encourage everyone to try it out at least once. Other than that, I like to disconnect from the hecticness of everyday life by going to the gym and sometimes (and if I have time) to cook something different.
