We were lucky to catch up with Giuliana Germani recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Giuliana with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My family. I come from a family that chased the American dream. It wasn’t just the success they found—though that was inspiring—but how they achieved it: through an unyielding work ethic, grit, and a belief in the value of hard work.
It starts with my grandmother. She came to this country from Italy with only a third-grade education. She spoke little English, but she had something that I like to consider her God given talent. My grandmother had a gift for sewing—a gift for creating. A talent that lead her to working in New York City with high end designers and runway models. She let her talent speak for itself. And that’s something I carry with me every day—an understanding that hard work, coupled with a passion for what you do, can open doors that maybe you originally didn’t think possible.
Then there were my parents, who taught me the value of perseverance. They instilled in me the idea that there were no shortcuts to success. Their work ethic became my blueprint. I’ve carried their lessons into every aspect of my life, from my career to my personal goals. Discovering a God given talent of my own. Giving me the confidence to take a chance of myself—to chase my dreams and take charge of my own business.
Looking back, it’s clear that my work ethic comes from a long line of people who were willing to take a chance and work hard to succeed. It was never about waiting for the world to hand them something; it was about creating their own path and making their own opportunities. My family showed me that success isn’t just about having talent—it’s about rolling up your sleeves, doing the hard work, and never giving up. I will be forever thankful for all they have taught me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
From a young age, I’ve always had a deep love for the arts. Drawing and painting were my first outlets, then it began to manifest through other mediums. Makeup became a big passion of mine.
As a dancer, I found a unique way to combine my love for art with my passion for beauty. Helping the other girls get ready before performances—doing their hair and makeup—became a natural extension of my artistic expression. I took pride in being so heavily relied upon.
That spark eventually turned into something bigger: a career in bridal hair and makeup. The first time I helped a bride on her wedding day, I realized that this was exactly where I was meant to be. There’s something truly special about being a part of one of the most important days of someone’s life, and the joy I felt when I saw a bride’s face light up as she caught her reflection was all inspiring. It wasn’t just about applying makeup or styling hair—it was about helping her feel like her most beautiful, radiant self.
That feeling of fulfillment didn’t stop at weddings. Over time, I transitioned into working in a salon, and every day in that chair reminds me of why I love what I do. There’s a unique power in helping someone achieve the hair of their dreams, whether it’s creating the perfect cut, the ideal color, or just making someone feel pampered and heard. It’s a subtle but powerful thing to help someone feel confident, beautiful, and happy when they leave my chair.
At the end of the day, my career is about more than just making people look good. It’s about making them feel good, inside and out. Whether it’s a bride walking down the aisle or someone coming in for a fresh new style, I’m grateful to be able to create a moment where they can see themselves in the best light possible. It’s a feeling that I know will never get old—because helping people feel beautiful never does.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three important qualities or skills that I feel have made the biggest impact in my career are integrity, time management, and the importance of quality over quantity.
To be your own business owner you need to have the integrity, the discipline to run your business. It’s so important to show up for your clients, to be reliable and hold yourself accountable.
And time management not only for scheduling clients but for myself as well. To have a work life balance to make sure I’m not working “outside office hours” in such an unconventional work environment.
And the quality of my product. Sure I could b trying to fit as many people in my schedule as possible. But then how can I guarantee they are getting the best work from me if I’m always worried about when the next one is coming in? I’d rather give someone the hair of their dreams, take my time doing it, and create a relationship with the client that will give them the feeling they are happy to come back to see me. Also as an artist, it’s my work going out into the world for people to look at. I want to know I created something I’m proud of.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
When I was in hair school my professor always said… “don’t be a one trick pony” …
Open the door for opportunities for yourself. Don’t be shy to dip your toe in other waters. How else will you know what you like? There’s nothing wrong with working on what you know your already good at. But it’s just as impotent to see if there’s any way you can expand on that skill to open yourself to new clients and new business opportunities. It can be easy and safe to stick with what you know. But taking a chance on yourself could be so rewarding.
