Meet Gladys Perez

We recently connected with Gladys Perez and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Gladys with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

My work ethic has been shaped throughout my career as a visual artist, working on both commercial and residential projects, primarily in Manhattan and the Hamptons. These demanding and sophisticated environments pushed me to constantly elevate the quality of my work and taught me the true value of professionalism in the art world.

From the very beginning, my goal has been clear: to create with integrity. That means treating clients fairly, offering honest guidance, and always delivering on time and in line with expectations. I’ve never relied on formal legal contracts—my word has always been my commitment. That approach has opened doors and helped me build lasting, trust-based relationships.

What drives me is not just creativity, but the continuous desire to grow and improve. For me, art is more than a finished piece—it’s a shared experience between the artist and the viewer. In that connection, respect, punctuality, and transparency are just as essential as talent.

My artistic journey is a blend of passion, professionalism, and constant evolution. With every brushstroke and every project, I seek new ways to express myself and create meaningful connections that leave a lasting impression.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My passion lies in creativity—whether it’s through an accessory, a garment, a mural, or a painting. I love exploring a wide range of artistic expressions and using them in projects that have meaning and purpose.

For the past eight years, I’ve focused on repurposing leather, textiles, and other materials to create unique accessories and home decor items. This vision became the foundation of my brand: Gladys Perez Designs, where I blend sustainability with artistic design.

I also collaborate with nonprofit organizations that serve senior communities, offering painting and craft workshops. This community work is a key part of my creative mission, connecting art with emotional wellness and social inclusion.

I’ve had the privilege of participating in several exhibitions in galleries and consulates, including those of Argentina and Peru. I’m always open to new collaborations and currently working on a new product line inspired by contemporary Latin American art.

I am also a Creative Entrepreneur at SoHarlem.org help train their Apprentices.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I believe there are three key qualities that have had the greatest impact on my journey:
1. Creativity: I’ve always been deeply connected to creative expression—whether through design, art, or crafts. I love exploring new techniques and materials, which keeps my work fresh, evolving, and full of life.
2. Perseverance: I’ve been painting for over 40 years. Consistency and dedication have been essential in continuing to grow as an artist and entrepreneur, even during challenging times. Staying committed, even when results aren’t immediate, has been one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned.
3. Lifelong learning: I’m always looking to expand my knowledge. Right now, for example, I’m learning Italian. I truly believe that staying curious and open to learning is key to growing both personally and professionally.

My advice for those just starting out is to trust your inner voice, give yourself permission to experiment without fear of failure, and commit to the long journey of growth. The creative path is not always linear, but with passion, discipline, and openness, it can be incredibly fulfilling.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instill in me a deep love for art and creativity from a very young age. Both were artisans—my mother worked with ceramics, sewing, and weaving with great dedication, and my father designed decorative ceiling molds for hotels in northern Argentina. I grew up surrounded by materials, textures, and colors—but most importantly, by the passion and commitment they poured into their craft. That legacy has profoundly shaped my journey as an artist and designer.
