Meet Glenn Bolton

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Glenn Bolton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Glenn, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Easy. Learning early on that the way I look compared to others has little to no impact on my ability to be effective and contribute to the project. I think people get too caught up in representation and they forget that at the end of the day, they’re representing themselves first and foremost.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

At this point, I’m focused on promoting my music and growing as a music producer. I like to create instrumentals that establish an energy and mood the listener can latch on to. Then I record some crazy lyrics over it. The more ridiculous, the better.

The thing that makes my music stand out is that it’s both funny and lighthearted. I’m not trying to be malicious or controversial. Just good vibes.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I’d have to say first, having the student mentality is a must. If you’re always willing to learn, growth is inevitable. Second is persistence. Knowing how to stick it out when things get rough puts you ahead of most people. Third is integrity. Get to know yourself and know how to say “no” to things that don’t represent you.

My advice to anyone who is early on in their career would be

1. Spend 30 mins a day studying your craft

2. Develop a routine and stick to it

3. Be okay with not being liked by everyone

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Yes! I’m looking for photographers and videographers. I have new music recorded and I need to get some media done so I can market it. You can find me on IG @g_rillah
