We were lucky to catch up with Glenn Woodard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Glenn with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic came from my dad, he recently passed around back in July of this year so it was a big loss to our family but I was very blessed to learn so much from him growing up about working and doing the right things in life to take you places. From a early age i was always with my dad doing things with him growing up. He was a Maintenance supervisor for a local bank and he handle everything from new construction to everyday duties such as electrical work, Hvac systems repairs etc… he was the boss so he would always take me with him to work when he could, and I never missed a chance to hope in the truck and go with him I love what he did and the time we got to spend together. But he would always included me in projects and make me help out and learn different things. He loved to work and he was always had some project going either at work or at home and I was pretty much involved in those projects no matter what. I just really never knew any different but to get up and help no matter what we had going on, and he always told me that if I ever wanted anything in life I was going to have to work for it, and that has always stuck with me even until this day. I love to work, and the work ethic he gave me really prepared me for my future. I feel really blessed to have a dad that would spend that time with and teach me things in life that would really prepare me for my future.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In 2018 I was working as a Senior Estimator for a Pipeline Construction Service Provider and things where kind of slow in that area and I have always loved the outdoor and working with my hands and equipment, So I bought a tractor, dump trailer and brush cutter and just started doing side jobs to help pay for the equipment and I really enjoyed being outside doing dirt work, brush cutting etc… for myself and for others. An every chance I got I would offer my services to the public if they ever needed some help with their projects. With the help of social media I started to share my work and services for more and more people to see and things just took off. So in early 2019 I was getting so busy with side business it was taking up all my time, I had to make a decision, I decided to take a chance and go out on my own full time doing property management such as land clearing, dirt work, forestry mulching etc… That’s when I started the business we have now Southern South Services LLC. Lot of people ask me where I came up with that name and really to be honest at the time I thought it sounded good and Just went with it and I found that having a unique name kind of makes you stand out from others, so we just stuck with it. So since 2019 the company has really grown into something I couldn’t ever imagine. We specialize in land clearing and property management for residential and commercial customers all over the south east. We can clear 1 acre of land or 100 acres of land and make it usable property for the customer. We have upgraded our equipment to more specialized equipment to handle these larger projects. Projects such as clearing 100’s of acres for local airport for future development, building a large gun range for a customer out of Nashville, TN and to help take care of hunting property for the Wounded Worrier Foundation in Tennessee, Yes we are based out of Ellisville, MS but I do not let state lines hinder us from opportunity’s in other states. We love a challenge no matter where it is located. So I guess to best describe our business is we have the knowledge and equipment to offer our customers the best solutions for their projects, such as land clearing, dirt work, property management and upkeep or to specialized projects such as a gun ranges and or a outdoor training facility. Whatever it might be we are here to help their dreams come true and make their property provide the most out of it as it can and be a asset for them. We have grown from one tractor and myself, to now have four of us working daily on projects and our equipment has grown also we have two large commercial mulching machines, trackhoe, skid steer, work trucks and trailers, and all sorts of different attachments. Recently we have added a haul truck and lowboy to help haul our equipment for ourselves and we offer equipment hauling for others as well. We love what we do and love seeing a property go from looking terrible to making it usable land and hearing the land owner say I never knew this place could look like this. Helping others really makes us happy and we really do love what we do each day.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things that really stand out on my journey that no matter what certain career I was in, I was always made sure to show up on time, be respectful and also be willing to learn new things. If I could give anyone any advice would be always be humble, treat people the way you would want to be treated and never say that’s not my job, Always show interest in everything your asked to do even if its not really your job description. I was never one to back down from a challenge, I always have looked at things as if that person can do it then why can’t I. If you really have a passion for something go out and get a job in that area and start at the bottom and soak everything you can from someone that has being doing it for years. Never stop learning, always have goals and always remember you can’t be the boss on day one you have to put your time in and work your way up. Stay Humble and things will work out just might take a little longer than you expected.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents and my family have always taught me to be respectful, kind and humble growing up. My dad gave me every bit of my work ethic and drive to become a better person and that I could do whatever I wanted if I was willing to work for it. My mom was always my number one fan and stood behind me on things when nobody else would.
