We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Grace Davenport a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Grace, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
It’s funny to be answering this question right now as I’m currently going through what might be the toughest season of my life.
I’ve endured several hardships throughout my life, and I have found that what keeps me going is my desire to show up for others and encourage them to keep going. Whether this be through entertaining or being an influence in other people’s lives, I have always found purpose in being someone people can look to for advice, inspiration, or as a shoulder to lean on.
I grew up in an unbalanced and unpredictable home, which I think propelled me into finding anything and everything I could get my hands on to be creative with. Having an outlet was always crucial for my well-being, and continues to be the biggest source of comfort for me.
Even as I have been through job loss, heartbreak, community shifts- I have always been able to rely on my ability to entertain and create. It brings me a peace to know I can connect with anyone through my work.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I currently work as a freelance social media strategist, working directly with small businesses to create and promote their brands. While this is my career, my passions lie within creating spaces for people to be authentic. This translates across social media and also dips its way into my work as a producer and director, which is where I tend to spend my free time.
My collegiate background is in film and theatre, so much of the work I do (no matter the medium) is focused on storytelling. I use the tools I learned in my degree programs with all of the clients I have. For example, when working with a client who desires content creation, I lean into a theatrical approach with how I film and edit the content.
Another example of this is in the physical art I create. I have recently begun selling artwork at markets, which is something I never anticipated doing. However, I’ve found that the themes in my social media and production work blend into the physical products I have. My paintings are usually tied to experiences I’ve had or concepts I believe strongly in.
No matter what I’m doing, it’s always my goal to get to the heart of someone or something. I want my work to resonate with others.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think a sense of self, discernment, and empathy are my biggest assets. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to rely on my intuition to make big decisions, and I find that 9/10 I am my best better. I would encourage anyone on their journey to be the best versions of themselves to lean into what makes them..them. One of my favorite quotes is “the privilege of a lifetime is being who you are” and I LIVE by that law. But part of that is also knowing how to see others for who THEY are and the value in what they can bring to the table.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I LOVE a client who comes to me with a strong idea and a sense of collaboration. It is always easier working with someone who knows what they want and can give me a clear image of what they’d like me to do for them. I also really appreciate someone willing to work with me and hand off tasks to me they know I can handle well. Collaboration is such a big part of the work I do.
