Meet Grace Mcglynn

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Grace Mcglynn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Grace below.

Hi Grace, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I mean the boring answer is that I did a lot of theater as a kid, I think performing is just really fun and i still do this day! I think it helped a lot with being comfortable talking to people. However, I think it helped me with the idea of faking it till i make it. Even if i was in a bad mood, Pushing pass that to talk to people, and entertain friends would always make me feel better.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am an illustrator/graphic designer! Im pretty all over the place when it comes to what I do. I love doing all things marketing, editorial and even concept art. But, the one thing i keep consistent is my bright color schemes and funky shapes/lineart. If anything I really like the feeling of bringing silly, pleasant vibes to people who see my work. I think if it makes someone smile then i’ve done my job. Currently I’ve been doing a lot of freelance stuff as my schooling comes to a close and I’m excited to see where it all takes me!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Its obviously different depending on the person but I think the biggest thing that help me were confidence, Exploring difference influences/ideas, and accepting my ugly art. The last one was the most important and I for sure learned it the hard way. Sometimes you have such a cool idea in your head and no matter what you do it just is not working out on paper. I think pushing through that and still finishing the bad artwork forced me to overcome and practice skills in my artwork. Even if the final outcome wasn’t perfect. I always left it knowing way more about something in my art then i did coming in. the more you do it, the more all those difficult things start clicking. it takes a while but it was worth it. And of course, influences outside of what you like is so important for artist to do. Refusing to leave a bubble of what you like also stops you from exploring new ideas when it comes to your own art!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

In all honesty, it has been a lot of people who make me who I am. But most importantly right now, Its my sister. I genuinely don’t know where i would be without her. I joke and say i steal all my good parts from her. Shed never say it out loud but she’s kindest, coolest, and strongest person I know. Even though are careers are very different. she always just really good advice as I become an adult. Also She was the one to teach me that confidence is key and just making others feel welcomed around you will make you feel great as well. I’ll never be worried about what comes for me after school, because I have her by my side.
