We recently connected with Graham Jewell and have shared our conversation below.
Graham, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Differentiating between professional and personal value has been essential to my confidence as an individual and creative. I used to put my confidence solely in the work basket, judging my creativity based on the value it holds in a societal sense instead of a more intentionally personal sense. Since moving to New York, I’ve been blessed with an incredible community of friends, colleagues, acquaintances and creatives. I’m constantly inspired by the people around me and have been able to create more intentionally and honestly since being more tapped into myself as an individual outside of the value I hold professionally.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve had my hands in most industries, mainly in music and entertainment marketing. I moved to NY last Fall to help Matte Projects open their new venue at Rockefeller Center and have found myself moving away from the marketing world since then. The value I bring to the table as a creative, whether it be photo, writing, or curation, is where my heart is.
My favorite projects as of recent have been capturing people in their elements. Photographing parties, shows, and friends existing on a night out fills my cup. I believe my artistic career as a photographer is finally starting to blossom. I’ve found my passion for sure.
This year I want to capture more parties, backstage moments, people…. I love people. Being able to show that love and admiration through photos has been a dream.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
TRYING EVERYTHING. My professional and creative career has been a culmination of trial and error. I’ve worked in music, fashion, film, wellness… It was always really difficult for me to fit into the bubble of specific industries. I’m also very butt-headed, so trying to make other people happy when I didn’t agree with their approaches (marketing, branding…) was tough and turned my creativity off completely. If I had any advice, it’s try everything and listen to your gut. Some things look great on paper, but if it doesn’t feel right, don’t force it.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have an insanely loving group of friends. They impress me with their humility, skill, and space they hold for the people they care about in their hearts. I wouldn’t be anywhere without the people around me.
Some of my favorite (and honestly, most impactful) moments have been getting drinks with friends and talking about what we love, what we want to do, how we want to express… I have some awesome collaborations in the works with said individuals.
Feeling loved, for me, has been the most important and influential part of my life.
