Meet Grailian

We recently connected with Grailian and have shared our conversation below.

Grailian, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Thats a great question. For me its a couple of things. One being my wife Dominique. With her being a content creator she is always coming up
with different concepts which keeps me engaged creatively. Another thing I do is search for inspiration in the media I consume. Im a big pro wrestling fan, video gamer, and a 90s anime fan so for some of my videos or photos I would use some type of element or even give a nod to thoqse mediums. Recently I did a video with my wife highlighting Stich Fix clothes with the ending credits of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho being an inspiration for the pacing of the video as well as the song titled “Homework Never Ends” being used as the soundtrack. Lastly I just look at my surroundings and ask myself “how can I make this look like an awesome photo”. It challenges me as a photographer and it keeps me sharp for when I have to do jobs.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

So my name is Grailian Nash and I am a photographer from St. Louis. MO. I’ve been an active photographer for 7 years under my business GN Photography. I mainly focus on event photography (birthday parties, galas, business events, weddings, etc) for my business but I can do personal shoots and modeling shoots. Creatively I enjoy doing street photography as well as urbex and sports photography. I love doing events because I feel like thats where you can capture people being themselves. 90% of the time you see people taking in the event and enjoying it whether its a big laugh they let out or there is an emotional moment where everyone hugs. Yes there are times you do the classic “get together and say cheese” shots and those are ok but its the candid photos and those in the moment shots that really tell the story of an event so in some ways Im also a storyteller.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1.) Be fluid- Life is constantly changing. You think you have a straight and narrow path to take and then something happens that causes you to pivot and change course and that’s where being fluid comes in. Ive had to leave jobs, been fired, and even went through being homeless with my wife and 4 kids and I wouldn’t have been able to navigate those situations properly by being rigid and thinking one way.

2.) Be open to learn: Whether you’re taking a course or self teaching yourself you have to be open to learning and practicing. Don’t shut yourself off from learning new skills because you never know when those skills can come in handy. I was first aid and CPR certified, Ive learned the debt collection process and how it works, and even learned so many tricks and tips using Google Maps. While those things may not have to do with what I do now as a photographer, these are still skills that can come in handy at any time at any point so never discount the power of an open mind to learn.

3.) Everything has a purpose. This is especially true in art and in business. There will be times I have shot some photos or some video that may not have immediate use or maybe didnt turn out well but it doesn’t mean that its useless. They can be used a learning tool to see where I can improve in my processes or with a Little bit of creativity I can give that content some life in ways that I may not have known when I initially captured the content. Its all about being fluid in your thinking

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

If I only had a decade I would enjoy my decade with my wife and kids. I enjoy being a husband and a father so I would make sure I would try to spend as much time with them whether we travel, or if we’re just hanging out at home.
