Meet Grandmaster Shifu Brett Russell

We were lucky to catch up with Grandmaster Shifu Brett Russell recently and have shared our conversation below.

Grandmaster Shifu Brett, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
This is a great question – for many people who start training with me, a big part of what they want to achieve for themselves is building their own self confidence.

During my martial arts training from a young age, and through each level of martial arts I’ve achieved, there comes a set of skills to learn and master. These skills provide support to achieve goals and through times of adversity, both in training and in life.
For me, my training has been like looking into a mirror, It has allowed me to see my true self, and improve what I could – and accept what I could not change Once this happened, I truly saw who I am and this gave me true inner confidence. This confidence has built my resilience and resolve to do many things, including running a business that focuses on authenticity, accessibility, consistency and innovation.

I feel blessed that I am still able to pass these learnings on to others, to help them to learn who they truly are themselves. It’s not necessarily about changing who you are, it’s about seeing yourself – even what you might see as shortcomings – and having pride in who you are.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ve been able to get to where I am today with the 3 As: Attitude, Aptitude and Adaptability. It’s not just about having the right knowledge or a great product. Being positive and flexible in your approach allows you and your business to reach your potential and keep growing and thriving during change.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
As SDF is expanding, we are looking at opening new centres and partnering with people wanting to own a fitness business or work in the holistic fitness industry. Contact Grandmaster Shifu Brett Russell to discuss opportunities directly.
