We recently connected with Grant Burnside and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have GRANT with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Growing up in a small town in Ohio, there was not a lot of abundance. We had a lot of impoverished people who were discontent but complacent with how life had turned out for them. Fortunately that was a motivation to help me realize what I did not want for my life, and I was able to see how important work was for gaining a better life. We moved to Franklin, TN in 2005 and that opened my eyes to a whole new world in which you could increase your life and those around you by working hard and staying in your dedicated lane. I have been fortunate to be able to experience life on both sides of the spectrum – poverty and abundance.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Superior Exteriors Cleaning Company started with a $500 investment in August of 2017. I had 100 homemade flyers with stock images that I set off and knocked doors in my neighborhood until I had passed them all out, Of those 100 doors knocked, I was able to land two jobs. On both of those jobs I lost money, but I learned how to better price the service. I stayed the course.
In 2018 we continued slowly getting jobs and started offering inside and out window cleaning. I was still working full time and this was done on evenings and weekends. I purchased a covered trailer and had it professionally wrapped to move equipment and have better advertising.
In 2019 we began offering gutter cleaning. This helped us add to our list of services and attract new clients.
In 2020 we began offering stone paver work. This was helpful for high end homes.
By 2021 I had to either jump in full time or let the business go. I decided to see what I could do. I jumped into debt for $20,000 and purchased a large commercial grade trailer. I joined our local Chamber of Commerce, and I started washing.
Before long I needed a guy. So I made my first hire. Within two months we needed another, so we hired again.
Each year we grew and took on more clients, employees, and trucks.
Today we have 5 trucks, two trailers, and 7 people on the team. We are the largest and highest rated exterior cleaning company in Williamson County, TN. We also purchase and resell chemicals and sealants to other exterior cleaning companies. We provide tutorials and are paid by YouTube for content. We mentor new businesses and high school students wanting to get into the trade.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Vision: Know what you want and go for it. Think about it, see it, and obsess over it. Do not let anything stand in your way.
Patience: Rome was not built in a day. It will take years, sometimes decades to acquire real wealth. Stay the course. Loom at each days wins and don’t get discouraged.
Marketing: Always be marketing. this will be the single most important part of your business. Sales drives everything.
Read books or just listen to people who are where you want to be in life. Success leaves clues.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Watching and connecting with the guys who are where I want to be in 5 years. In my specific case – Coty Yarborough with Southeast Softwash. His company is doing 7 figures a year now.
