Meet Grant Gill

We were lucky to catch up with Grant Gill recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Grant, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I think that, oftentimes, people searching for their purpose get the whole thing backwards. It is tempting to think that you will find whatever that thing is and from day one you have a deep sense of “rightness” like this must be the grand purpose you were searching for all along.

However, in my experience, it often goes the other way around. You just end up doing something and somewhere along the way, after you have put in the hard work, after you have persevered a few of the early tests and pitfalls, after you have started to gain enough skill to put what exists in your mind into reality, you realize you’ve found purpose. The one searching for purpose sometimes gives up too soon and doesn’t realize that the purpose is in the doing of the thing and applying yourself deeply and not in the thing itself.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Grant Gill Furniture aims to elevate custom cabinetry and furniture to an artform. We want to collaborate with architects, interior designers, and builders to integrate our work seamlessly into the overall aesthetic.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

When I was first starting off, my naive optimism really helped me out. If I could have foreseen all the bumps in the road, doors closed in my face, unanswered cold calls, and flat-out failures, I may not have ever gotten started. I would say focusing on things one day at a time is the only way to keep moving forward.

Constant learning was another crucial element that helped me along. When you are starting off, the commodity you probably have plenty of is time, so use it to learn as many skills as possible.

Lastly, always tell the client you can do it and then figure out how to do it to the best of your abilities later. If you never take on things you haven’t done before, you will be stuck always doing the same things you have been doing.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m looking for architects, designers, and builders who want to push the limits of what custom cabinetry can be, push the limits of quality, and experiment with new materials and finishes to create a one-of-a-kind custom experience for homeowners.
