“Losing my brother Richie to sleep apnea was a devastating blow, but it has also been a powerful motivation for me to prioritize my own mental health and well-being. After his passing, I realized that I needed to take care of myself and seek help when I needed it. I’ve overcome and persisted despite the challenges related to mental health issues by:

– Seeking professional help and therapy to work through my grief and anxiety
– Building a support network of loved ones, friends, and a support group to talk through my emotions and experiences
– Practicing self-care activities like exercise, meditation, and hobbies to manage stress and improve my mood
– Learning healthy coping skills and techniques to deal with difficult emotions and situations
– Raising awareness about sleep apnea and mental health to help others who may be struggling

Remembering my brother Richie and his struggles with sleep apnea motivates me to keep moving forward and to prioritize my own mental health every day.”

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Sleep Apna advocate

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

“Looking back on my journey, I believe the three qualities that were most impactful were:

1. *Resilience*: The ability to bounce back from setbacks, learn from failures, and adapt to new situations.
2. *Self-awareness*: Understanding my strengths, weaknesses, values, and emotions to make informed decisions and navigate challenging times.
3. *Empathy*: The capacity to connect with others, understand their perspectives, and build meaningful relationships.

To develop or improve on these qualities, I would advise folks who are early in their journey to:

– Practice self-reflection and journaling to cultivate self-awareness
– Develop a growth mindset and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth
– Engage in active listening and ask open-ended questions to foster empathy and understanding
– Build a support network and seek mentorship from those who embody these qualities
– Embrace failure as a learning experience and focus on progress, not perfection

Remember, personal growth is a lifelong journey. Focus on progress, be patient, and kind to yourself, and you’ll be amazed at the impact these qualities can have on your life and the lives of those around you.”

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I’m feeling overwhelmed, it’s essential to take a step back, assess the situation, and prioritize self-care. Here are some of my strategies that might help:

1. *Breathe and relax*: Take slow, deep breaths, and try relaxation techniques like progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, or yoga.

2. *Identify and prioritize*: Make a list of tasks or stressors, and prioritize them based on importance and urgency. Focus on one task at a time.

3. *Break tasks into smaller steps*: Divide large tasks into manageable, smaller steps. This can make them feel less daunting.

4. *Take breaks and practice self-care*: Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as reading, walking, or spending time with loved ones.

5. *Seek support*: Reach out to friends, family, or a therapist for emotional support and guidance.

6. *Reframe perspective*: Try to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.

7. *Get enough sleep and exercise*: Prioritize physical well-being to improve mental resilience.

8. *Set boundaries*: Learn to say “no” and establish healthy limits with others to protect your time and energy.

9. *Practice gratitude*: Reflect on things you’re thankful for, no matter how small they may seem.

10. *Seek professional help*: If feelings of overwhelm persist, consider seeking help from a mental health professional.

Remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and taking steps to address it is a sign of strength, not weakness!
