We were lucky to catch up with Greg and Lacy Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Greg and Lacy, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My wife and I over the years have worked in various industries of the job field. Until one day, I turned down a wrong hallway in college and came across a flyer advertising working with children with special needs. We both interviewed for the job and immediately fell in love with the work! Being in the field of ABA, 12 years later, we thought it bests to help fulfill the academic need ABA doesn’t quite focus on.
Our company provides services in a variety of areas such as academics, driving lessons, job skills, school readiness, increasing social skills, and much more! We feel as if our purpose is to help those who need a little extra help in their life. It is great and rewarding work, and being able to see the progress our clients make is what truly keeps going!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Our business works with children and adults with Special Needs by focusing on academic tutoring services, life skill help, and social skill help. We offer our help in a variety of areas such as math, reading comprehension, conversational skills, street safety skills, permit/drivers license testing help, and things of that nature. My wife and I absolutely love what we do! Being able to wake up each day knowing we get the chance and opportunity to impact our clients lives in a positive way is what drives us to always give our clients the best sessions! We are still accepting new clients for the upcoming summer months and look forward to continuing to help and inspire those we get the opportunity to help.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One of the most impactful skills we learned early in our journey was patience. When working with children and adults with Special Needs, it is important to know that the cognitive levels of each individual will vary. Some of our clients learn at a faster rate and are verbal, while others take a bit longer to process the task or information presented and are non-verbal. No matter the level, we are always patient and go at our clients pace.
Another impactful area in our line of work is the understanding that each of our clients are different and learn at different paces. Just because clients are in the same age range, does not mean that what we do with one client will necessarily work or translate to the other. My wife and I always tailor our sessions to our clients capabilities and meet them where they are, never the other way around.
Lastly, I would say our biggest and most important skill would be our care factor. We truly love working with each and every client we get the opportunity to work with and it shows through our sessions. We love having fun and coming up with interactive ways for our clients to not only enjoy our company when we arrive, but additionally retain the information we review during our time together.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
In our eyes, every individual is unique and deserving of understanding, support, and care, especially those navigating the challenges of multiple disabilities like Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and more. When it comes to ideal clients, We don’t look for specific characteristics or traits. Instead, we see the potential for growth, connection, and learning in every person we work with.
What truly makes someone an ideal client for us is their willingness to engage in the process. We try a various amount of strategies to help meet each clients need, but also enjoy and have fun at the same time. What matters most is their readiness to explore their abilities and overcome obstacles with patience and determination.
We find fulfillment in forming deep connections with individuals who are ready to embark on this journey of self-discovery and growth. Together, we can create a supportive environment where each person’s unique strengths shine through, regardless of the challenges they may face!
