Meet Greg Marlow

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Greg Marlow a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Greg , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I found out through a terminal cancer diagnosis that the only choice you have is to meet it head on and never give in, no matter how bad the news gets. You really find out what true faith is when there isn’t a plan B. My resilience comes from my faith coupled with a never back down attitude.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am an inspirational singer songwriter. My writing style is inspired by real life experiences and my faith. My goal as a writer is to be inspirational, encouraging, positive and uplifting, and being from the mountains of East Tennessee, my style naturally leads towards country and mountain music blended with gospel.

My music is ministry minded. I’m not just a performer. I pray daily for the Lord to anoint every word I sing, every note I play, and the words of my testimony to be effective in changing lives.

I have released three singles this past year that have topped the country gospel charts and will soon be releasing a complete album. I also released a video to my first single “Second Chances,” produced by Cody McCarver, which was nominated by the Josie Awards for Social Impact video of the year this past November.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. My faith: I’ve learned through my life that God will get me through anything that comes my way. My favorite verse I live by is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

2. Musicianship: Although I’m self-taught, I’ve spent a lifetime learning and honing, trying to better my craft, and have had a strong family background in music and singing. I grew up with my Mom, Aunts, Uncles, and cousins and friends gathered at our house and sung on the front porch each night. It was a big part of my roots.

3. My drive: I’m not a quitter! I go full-force because I believe so strongly in what I’m doing and that I am called into my ministry. When things get tough, I hang on for the ride and figure out a way to fix or get through it.

My advice to anyone is to believe in yourself and the one who sent you, stay focused, and don’t quit!

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

They encouraged me and believed in me. They followed me to anywhere I was going to play and sing. The one thing that I never heard was, “You can’t do that.” They believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself. They gave me a positive home to grow up in and taught me the importance of hard work and to giving it all you got and to never quit. Quit and can’t didn’t live at our house.
