Meet Greg Smith

We recently connected with Greg Smith and have shared our conversation below.

Greg, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

To develop confidence and self-esteem, I had to come to accept two things. First, that I’m not enough—and that’s beyond okay. I’m a follower of Christ, and despite what’s often written and said on the internet, Christianity isn’t so much about religion as it is about relationship. And in that relationship, we begin to see just how extremely flawed we are—personally, emotionally, mentally, and even creatively.

Through my ever-growing relationship with Christ, I’ve learned not to put my confidence in what I can do or even in who I am, because I will fail and come up short so often throughout my journey.

The second thing I’ve had to accept is that confidence and self-esteem are an ever-ending loop. There is no final destination. Every blessing, every promotion, every “next level” requires a hit to your confidence and self-esteem. While that’s still a hard pill to swallow, it’s something that can help you understand that the next level requires a new level of confidence and self-esteem.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a filmmaker and the founder of Crux, a video marketing agency built on story, purpose, and high standards. My work blends faith, creativity, and strategy to help brands create content that actually moves people—not just markets to them.

Crux was born from my years as a freelance filmmaker, but it’s grown into something much bigger. Now, we focus on helping high-end clients tell their stories with clarity and emotional impact. What makes this special for me is combining my passion for storytelling with the values I live by—my faith, my role as a father, and the belief that great content should feel deeply human.

Balancing business and fatherhood isn’t easy, but it keeps me focused. My son inspires everything I do. And as Crux continues to grow, I’m excited to keep building something meaningful—for my clients, and for him.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Make decisions, not choices. Be humble—you’re never as important as you think you are. And lastly, actually seek to serve others.

The word decision comes from the Latin word decidere, which loosely means “to cut off.” In life and in business, choosing often leads to inconsistency. But when you genuinely decide to do something, you cut off every other alternative and excuse.

Every breath you take was given to you—be thankful every day that you get to do whatever it is you do. Be humble in all that you do. Your reality is another man’s dream. Grow some perspective.

Lastly, serve people—not for what you can get out of it, but for what it can do for them. That’s honestly what God has called us to do.

I’ll end with this quote from Myron Golden:
“All work, works.”
You gain something from every act of service.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

As I wrote in the last passage, life and business are about making a lot of good decisions—not just choices. The world today, especially in America, is optimized for choices. Everything is at our fingertips. Everything is easy, convenient, and comfortable. We get to pick and choose almost everything.

I struggle with cutting off every other alternative and staying disciplined to my core values when things get hard. I pray to God for strength. I pray for the ability to reshape my mind, retool my confidence during this season, and remind me that through Him, I have the ability to be a disciplined man—no matter the storm going on around me.
