We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gregg Cantor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gregg below.
Hi Gregg, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I started out as a good listener. As I matured, I have become more conscious of my communication to make sure its understood. Growing up before there was electronic communication is definitely an advantage for me and I consistently remind our team the rules I live by. Face to face is the best way to communicate, since there is body language, facial expressions and tone of spoken word. Video conferencing is good when the parties are not local or when it’s difficult to get everyone together in person. Phone calls should be a secondary form of communication or to address something time sensitive. Email should be used as a follow up to document telephone conversations, or to request approval of a document/documents. Often I draft emails, wait until the next day, and re-read them before sending. Text messages are for convenience to say you are on your way or to ask a quick and simple question.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m President/CEO of Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel, a 4 generation family business in San Diego California. We have been remodeling and building for families, couples and individuals for over 48 years. What I’m excited about is the reaction from our customers when we show them the high resolution model of what their home is going to look like the first time. Then our team continues to collaboration through final architectural approval, interior design and delivering their custom build or remodel. With the use of digital measuring, drone footage, architectural design software and our client portal, the communication is open and consistent all the way through and even after work is completed with warranty service.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Being on site with customers, trade partners, vendors and building inspectors is how I learned the service we provide. 2. Creating a mission statement and core values helped me learn how to establish our niche and unique selling proposition. 3. Knowing our business and who we best serve, provided valuable information for targeting the right audiences.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Traction was one of the most impactful books I have read in my life. This was the foundation for creating a leadership team that has helped us break through to the next level. Traction has provide the framework to better evaluate talent, hire the right people, implement KPIs and changing our approach to communication with customers.
