We were lucky to catch up with Gregg Pearlman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gregg, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
In College, I minored in Speech which helped me enunciate & form correct sentences to communicate productively. Next up was my career in Retail which helped my ability to understand the wants and needs of my customers which directly affected my ability to successfully do my job. Sales & Customer Service jobs are a great education. And, lastly – to always ask “is this what you wanted?” or “is everything ok?”. I have learned over the years to not leave any task without making sure it was accomplished to satisfaction. There is no going back. I heard a wonderful quote the other day – “It is better to be a fool for a moment than a fool for a lifetime”!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At this time in my life I am focused on ‘Giving Back’. Helping others & contributing to their success. Current duties include: recruiting & dispatching labor for Employers involved in Live Events, negotiating rates and conditions for them & growing our business so it better serves our members & all other workers. I am also on The Board of Directors of a new private school so young kids today can receive a good education with plenty of creative arts not available in Public Schools.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It starts with my love for Music & the appreciation for the Creative Arts. Secondly – my communication skills which apply in every facet of Life. The most important skill I am still learning is Patience.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
No one is perfect and it is impossible to make everyone happy all the time. In my current position at The Union – one of my duties is to enforce the rules which creates tension & hate. As long as I treat everyone the same – eventually all realize I am just doing my job and nothing should be taken personally.
