Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Grethel Pavon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Grethel, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is normal in a creative career like mine. There are many amazing photographers and video creators out there, and it can sometimes be difficult not to feel like an imposter. So starting from there, my strategy is more around trying to be in the present and take one step at a time and keep going with my projects and/or creative ideas I have, because at the end it is an exercise, if you keep working out you will see results, but if you stop because of doubt or what other people say, then you don’t become what you want.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi everyone! My name is Grethel and I am a photographer and video creator. I focused on branding, portraits, and commercial photography as well as video creation. However, my centralized expertise is in photography. Doing what I love is so amazing and I try to always remember that. It gives me the freedom to create from scratch and work with different kinds of people and businesses. I think what I love the most about photography is that I can create an image that will impact someone’s personal life or business. Currently I am revamping my website and working on some personal projects that I’ve aways wanted to do, which is open my Youtube channel in order to share not only my knowledge but being able to motivate or inspire someone to follow their dreams, believe in themselves, and never quit when it gets harder, because the best is about to arrive.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Focus, perseverance, and gratitude. All these and other positive qualities were key to keep working in this field and moving up. Everyone starting is not easy, but you should not lose hope. If there is something you don’t actually understand and you cant move on from it, please please look for help. Look for people who have made it, ask questions, keep it dynamic.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
like I always say, you will always feel overwhelmed. Why? because, for example: If you are not doing good and you have no clients, you feel overwhelmed cause its going bad. Same way, if its going really good, too many clients, and not a good structure in place, how to handle everyone? how to keep providing same quality with more people needing your services and sometimes feeling burned out? So from that, we need to learn to feel ok in the difficult moments. So one thing that has helped me a lot and may be cliche for many people is, being in the present. I do breathing exercises and try to calm myself and clear my head to be in the present and that helps me find better solutions if there is. Something else that has also helped is fasting. There are different types of fasting that help clear your head but of course you need to make sure to consult with your doctor first before trying it.
